How can government environmental policy affect the performance of SMEs: Chinese evidence

Dong Xiang et al.

Summary: This paper empirically explores the impact of China's environmental policy on the energy utilization and operating efficiencies of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) using survey data from Shandong Province. The results show that the policy has a significant positive effect on both efficiency performances of Chinese SMEs, with variations across industries and enterprise sizes. The policy has a greater impact on energy utilization efficiency in first and second tier cities, but no significant impact on operating efficiency. The enlightenments suggest the need to strengthen energy utilization awareness and refine environmental regulation standards for different types of enterprises.
