Improving thermoelectric performance of Fe2VAI-based Heusler compounds via high-pressure torsion

Kodai Fukuta et al.

Summary: Heusler-type Fe2V0.90+xTa0.10Al1-x alloys were processed using high-pressure torsion (HPT) to effectively decrease thermal conductivity and improve thermoelectric performance. Grain boundary segregation of Ta prevented grain coarsening during annealing, leading to grain refinement. Fe2V0.98Ta0.10Al0.92 exhibited improved thermoelectric performance, achieving one of the highest values ever reported for bulk Fe-2 VA1-based thermoelectric materials.

High solubility of Al and enhanced thermoelectric performance due to resonant states in Fe2VAlx

M. Parzer et al.

Summary: This paper explores the aluminum-rich region in the Fe-V-Al material system and proposes a promising approach to improve the thermoelectric properties of p-type Heusler alloys. Experimental results show that Fe2VAlx alloys with high Al solubility exhibit significantly increased thermopower and reduced thermal conductivity. The analysis suggests that the enhancement is likely attributed to the formation of a resonant state at the valence band edge, which is supported by density-functional-theory calculations. This work paves the way for the development of p-type full-Heusler materials with enhanced thermoelectric performance.

Significant improvement of the Seebeck coefficient of Fe2VAl with antisite defects

Julio Cesar A. Do Nascimento et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the effect of stoichiometric pairs of antisite defects on the electronic structure and Seebeck coefficient of the Fe(2)VAlHeusler alloy. Our results demonstrate that the introduction of these defects can change the Fe2VAl from a semi-metal to a semiconductor, leading to an increase in the Seebeck coefficient within a certain range of doping concentrations and temperatures.

Solubility limit and annealing effects on the microstructure & thermoelectric properties of Fe 2 V 1-x Ta x Al 1-y Si y Heusler compounds

Fabian Garmroudi et al.

Summary: Heusler compounds with Fe2V1-xTaxAl1-ySiy composition have shown high thermoelectric power factors due to band convergence and band gap opening by V/Ta substitution. Investigation on solubility limits of Ta and Si within the L21 phase revealed significant hindrance by Al/Si substitution. Different annealing conditions affect microstructure and thermoelectric properties, with additional annealing leading to phase segregation and impurity precipitate growth, impacting Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity.

Theory of huge thermoelectric effect based on a magnon drag mechanism: Application to thin-film Heusler alloy

Hiroyasu Matsuura et al.

Summary: The unexpectedly high thermoelectric performance of the thin-film Heusler alloy Fe2V0.8W0.2Al may be due to the magnon drag effect generated by the tungsten-based impurity band. Theoretical calculations and experimental comparisons suggest that the exceptional thermoelectric properties are likely related to the tungsten-based impurity band.

Summary: This study quantitatively analyzed the thermoelectric properties of Fe2V1-xTaxAl1-ySiy compounds, revealing an increase in band gap and Seebeck coefficient with Ta substitution, leading to an enhanced power factor with the highest value reported near room temperature. Additionally, the dominant scattering mechanisms of electrons were found to be fundamentally different between p-type and n-type materials.
