On black hole temperature in Horndeski gravity

K. Hajian et al.

Summary: In certain family of Horndeski gravity theories, Wald's entropy formula does not lead to the correct first law for black hole thermodynamics. The temperature of the black hole needs to be modified to include effects of an effective metric, which results in the correct first law when used in conjunction with the entropy computed by the solution phase space method. These results have broader implications for issues such as Hawking radiation and the species problem, extending beyond the realm of Horndeski theories.

Anomalies in gravitational charge algebras of null boundaries and black hole entropy

Venkatesa Chandrasekaran et al.

Summary: This paper explores the covariant phase space formalism applied to gravitational theories with null boundaries and proposes a new principle, based on holographic reasoning, to resolve the ambiguity in the definition of quasilocal charges. The study also analyzes the expression for the analog of the Brown-York stress tensor on the null surface, and provides a general formula for central extensions and anomalous transformation in the gravitational action. The research draws parallels between the fixed frame for the null normal and the holographic Weyl anomaly, with applications to near-horizon Virasoro symmetry leading to a derivation of fluxes and central charges.

The Weyl BMS group and Einstein's equations

Laurent Freidel et al.

Summary: We propose an extension of the BMS group, referred to as Weyl BMS or BMSW, which includes super-translations, local Weyl rescalings, and arbitrary diffeomorphisms of the 2d sphere metric. By generalizing the Barnich-Troessaert bracket, we demonstrate that the Noether charges of the BMSW group provide a centerless representation of the BMSW Lie algebra at every cross section of null infinity. This result implies that the flux-balance laws for the Noether charges validate the asymptotic Einstein's equations at null infinity.

Null boundary phase space: slicings, news & memory

H. Adami et al.

Summary: In the context of D-dimensional Einstein gravity, the boundary phase space with a co-dimension one null surface N as boundary is studied. The boundary symmetry algebra is a semi-direct sum of diffeomorphisms of N and Weyl rescalings. Through appropriate slicings of the phase space, the generic surface charges can be rendered integrable, leading to the charge algebra being a direct sum of the Heisenberg algebra and diffeomorphisms of the transverse space in a particular slicing.
