α-Gal present on both glycolipids and glycoproteins contributes to immune response in meat-allergic patients

Neera Chakrapani et al.

Summary: This study analyzed and compared the in vitro allergenicity of a-Gal-carrying glycoproteins and glycolipids from natural food sources. The results showed that both glycoproteins and glycolipids were able to strongly activate patient basophils, but glycoproteins had a higher allergenicity.

Sensitisation and allergic reactions to alpha-1,3-galactose in Podlasie, Poland, an area endemic for tick-borne infections

Krzysztof Rutkowski et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the relationship between tick bites and the production of alpha-gal sIgE, as well as its correlation with other infections. The results show that there is a close relationship between the production of alpha-gal sIgE and tick bites, but no correlation with other infections.

Experimental Research Models to Assess the Cross-Reactivity between Can f 5 and Human PSA-Two Different Perspectives

Kinga Lis et al.

Summary: Inhibition tests are valuable tools for assessing cross-reactivity between allergens. This publication presents two experimental models of inhibition tests: solid phase (SP-IT) and liquid phase (LP-IT). The results show that both models are effective for studying cross-reactivity between antigens.

a-Gal present on both glycolipids and glycoproteins contributes to immune response in meat-allergic patients

Neera Chakrapani et al.

Summary: This study compared the in vitro allergenicity of alpha-Gal-carrying glycoproteins and glycolipids from natural food sources. The research found that both glycoproteins and glycolipids carrying alpha-Gal could strongly activate patient basophils, with glycoproteins playing a major role in delayed anaphylaxis upon consumption of pork kidney and beef.

Alpha-Gal Allergy as a Cause of Intestinal Symptoms in a Gastroenterology Community Practice

Nathan E. Richards et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the frequency of IgE to alpha-gal in patients with unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms, and found that patients with allergy to mammalian products largely improved their symptoms by avoiding these products in their diet.

Bovine γ-globulin, lactoferrin, and lactoperoxidase are relevant bovine milk allergens in patients with α-Gal syndrome

Marija Perusko et al.

Summary: BGG, LF, and LPO were identified as relevant milk alpha-Gal-containing glycoproteins that bound AGS patients' IgE antibodies and activated their basophils. These proteins are likely involved in allergic reactions to milk in AGS patients. LPO was also shown to be an allergen for the first time.

The a-Gal Syndrome and Potential Mechanisms

Patricia Roman-Carrasco et al.

Summary: The a-Gal syndrome is a complex allergic disease characterized by specific IgE antibodies against a carbohydrate present in non-primate mammal cells and tissues. Individuals with a-Gal IgE antibodies experience delayed anaphylaxis after consuming red meat, a unique feature compared to other food allergies. Sensitization to a-Gal occurs through tick bites, and the immune response involves Th2-related immunity and a class switch to IgE antibodies against a-Gal, showcasing the distinct nature of this syndrome.

Alpha-gal syndrome: the first report in Poland

Mirella Brzozowska et al.

Summary: Alpha-gal syndrome is an IgE-dependent allergy to a specific sugar in red meat, commonly triggered by tick bites. Early diagnosis is essential as symptoms are often mistaken for idiopathic anaphylaxis, potentially leading to life-threatening complications.
