Mid-infrared Integrated Electro-optic Modulator Operating up to 225 MHz between 6.4 and 10.7 μm Wavelength

Miguel Montesinos-Ballester et al.

Summary: Mid-infrared spectroscopy is crucial for identifying molecular species, and integrated modulators are expected to have a significant impact in sensing applications. This work demonstrates a broadband integrated electro-optic modulator, paving the way for the development of multi-molecular on-chip spectroscopic systems operating at the longest mid-infrared wavelengths.

Waveguide-Integrated van der Waals Heterostructure Mid-Infrared Photodetector with High Performance

Po-Liang Chen et al.

Summary: The extension of the operation wavelength of silicon photonics to the mid-infrared band is of great importance for fields such as health care, astronomy, and chemical sensing. However, a major challenge for mid-IR silicon photonics has been the lack of high-speed, high-responsivity, and low noise-equivalent power photodetectors. In this study, researchers demonstrated a van der Waals heterostructure mid-IR photodetector integrated on a silicon-on-insulator waveguide, which exhibited high responsivity and stable switching performance.

All-optical light manipulation based on graphene-embedded side-polished fiber

Quandong Huang et al.

Summary: This study presents an all-optical light manipulation method using a graphene-embedded side-polished fiber with a Norland Optical Adhesives-coated structure. The insertion loss of the device is effectively reduced by the NOA coating. Enhanced interaction between graphene and light is achieved through the strong evanescent field and longer interaction length of the SPF. The device demonstrates effective all-optical manipulation with a high modulation depth and efficiency, broadband operation wavelength, and low insertion loss.

High-speed quantum cascade detector characterized with a mid-infrared femtosecond oscillator

Johannes Hillbrand et al.

Summary: Quantum cascade detectors (QCDs) based on intersubband transitions are demonstrated to have a large electrical bandwidth optimized for 4.3 μm wavelength. The impulse response of fully packaged QCDs shows a full-width at half-maximum of only 13.4 ps, corresponding to a 3-dB bandwidth of over 20 GHz, with detection capability reported up to at least 50 GHz without the need for electronic amplification.

1/f Noise Characteristics of Waveguide-Integrated PbTe MIR Detectors and Impact on Limit of Detection

Emanuele Guglielmi et al.

Summary: The noise power spectral density of a waveguide-integrated PbTe mid-infrared detector was characterized, revealing the presence of a current-dependent 1/f term dominating at low frequency and/or high bias, as well as a substantially flat frequency response in the range between 1 kHz to 1 MHz. A lock-in readout strategy was proposed to operate in the region of minimum noise without penalties in detection performance, along with practical guidelines to optimize readout resolution. The limit of detection of a gas sensing system using PbTe photoconductors was derived to demonstrate how careful co-design of sensors and electronics can significantly improve detection performance.

Ultrafast Quantum-Well Photodetectors Operating at 10 μm with a Flat Frequency Response up to 70 GHz at Room Temperature

Michael Hakl et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates heterodyne detection at lambda around 10 micrometers with a nearly flat frequency response up to 70 GHz at room temperature using a GaAs/Al0.2Ga0.8As multi-quantum-well heterostructure. The device architecture achieves a parasitic capacitance of around 30 fF, yielding a RC-limited 3 dB cutoff frequency >150 GHz at 300 K. Intrinsic roll-off time constants as low as 1 ps at room temperature are obtained through quantitative modeling with a small-signal equivalent circuit.
