STUDY OF A CONVECTIVE EVENT DURING THE RELAMPAGO FIELD EXPERIMENT USING SPECTRAL POLARIMETRY

Sounak Kumar Biswas et al.

Summary: Dual-polarization measurements from weather radars are used to study the characteristics and dynamics of hydrometeors. This paper discusses the application of spectral polarimetry on dual-polarization radar observations from a convective event. It is found that different particle size distributions in regions of heavy rainfall exhibit size sorting.

Complementarity of wind measurements from co-located X-band weather radar and Doppler lidar

Jenna Ritvanen et al.

Summary: Accurate wind profile measurements are crucial for various applications. In this study, the measurement capabilities of a weather radar and a Doppler lidar in different weather conditions were quantified. Both instruments showed good agreement in wind measurements, and their combination increased the spatial coverage of wind observations across a wide range of weather conditions.

Summary: Velocity waves in the atmosphere can affect precipitation and their detection using weather radar data is important for atmospheric research and weather forecasting. This paper presents a method to routinely detect velocity waves using Doppler radial velocity data from a scanning weather radar.

Turbulence in the Marine Boundary Layer and Air Motions below Stratocumulus Clouds at the ARM Eastern North Atlantic Site

Virendra P. Ghate et al.

Summary: Marine stratocumulus clouds are closely related to turbulence in the boundary layer, and drizzle is commonly seen within them. Data from the ARM's ENA site over a six-year period showed that variance of vertical velocity in the marine boundary layer is influenced by wind direction, season, and cloud cover. Moreover, vertical velocity and cloud fraction display a distinct diurnal cycle, with higher values at night compared to daytime.

Surface-Layer Wind Shear and Momentum Transport From Clear-Sky to Cloudy Weather Regimes Over Land

A. M. Koning et al.

Summary: This study investigates the variation of wind shear and momentum fluxes in different wind and cloud regimes using data from a 9-year dataset and Large Eddy Simulation. It was found that the LES can reproduce certain clouds for specific atmospheric states, but underestimates the number of non-convective cloud days. Momentum flux profiles are similar across all cloud regimes, with larger total momentum flux in days with large cloud cover. Additionally, there is less surface-layer wind shear in convective cloud regimes compared to clear-sky days with similar stability.

Counter-Gradient Momentum Transport Through Subtropical Shallow Convection in ICON-LEM Simulations

Vishal Dixit et al.

Summary: The study found that subtropical shallow convection plays a role in affecting trade winds by exhibiting a noticeable friction effect on momentum transport, especially significant below cloud base while minimal within the cloud layer. Analysis of momentum flux showed that in the cloud layer, the counter-gradient flux is primarily driven by convectively-triggered nonhydrostatic pressure gradients and horizontal circulations surrounding the clouds.
