High ENSO sensitivity in tree rings from a northern population of Polylepis tarapacana in the Peruvian Andes

Doris B. Crispin-DelaCruz et al.

Summary: The study found that the tree growth of the northern P. tarapacana population is highly sensitive to precipitation in the prior summer season, with a positive correlation when the South American Summer Monsoon reaches its maximum intensity in the region. Additionally, there is a positive relationship with current year temperature, suggesting that radial growth may be enhanced by warm, less cloudy conditions during the year of formation. Strong positive relationship was also found between el Nino 3.4 and tree growth variability during the current growing season.

A combined view on precipitation and temperature climatology and trends in the southern Andes of Peru

Noemi Imfeld et al.

Summary: Communities in the southern Peruvian Andes heavily rely on climatic conditions for rain-fed agriculture and freshwater resources from glaciers and snow melt. Precipitation shows a strong annual cycle with spatial variability, while temperature trends differ between maximum and minimum temperatures. El Nino Southern Oscillation has modifying effects on precipitation and temperature, leading to larger trends in maximum temperatures.

Trends and variability of precipitation extremes in the Peruvian Altiplano (1971-2013)

Adrian Huerta et al.

Summary: Research on precipitation extremes in the Andes has shown that there is no significant global trend in the Altiplano region, but a slight decrease in precipitation is observed in the Southern PA. The variability of total precipitation is mainly influenced by precipitation frequency, and the Central Tropical Pacific sea surface temperature plays a significant role in wet periods and total precipitation in the southwestern PA.

Different climate sensitivity for radial growth, but uniform for tree-ring stable isotopes along an aridity gradient in Polylepis tarapacana, the world's highest elevation tree species

Milagros Rodriguez-Caton et al.

Summary: This study investigated the climate influence on tree growth in high-elevation areas, revealing that temperature has a greater impact on tree growth in wetter regions, while precipitation plays a larger role in drier areas. Warm and dry climate conditions led to enriched stable isotopes in tree rings at all study sites.
