Statistical Approach to Assess Chill and Heat Requirements of Olive Tree Based on Flowering Date and Temperatures Data: Towards Selection of Adapted Cultivars to Global Warming

Omar Abou-Saaid et al.

Summary: Delineating chilling and forcing periods in olive trees is critical for understanding the timing of budburst and bloom. This study analyzed flowering data from 331 cultivars over six years and found that the variability of inter-annual temperatures is the main factor determining the relevance of delineating these periods. The study also assessed the chill and heat requirements of 285 cultivars and classified Mediterranean olive cultivars into four groups based on their chill requirements, providing insights for selecting adapted cultivars to global warming.

Early production of table olives at a mid-7th millennium BP submerged site off the Carmel coast (Israel)

E. Galili et al.

Summary: The earliest evidence for large-scale table olive production was discovered at the submerged site of Hishuley Carmel in Israel, dating back to the mid-7th millennium BP. This site showed preparation of large quantities of table olives, while nearby Kfar Samir site was found to extract olive oil, suggesting different olive processing methods in the region.

Mediterranean Olive Orchards under Climate Change: A Review of Future Impacts and Adaptation Strategies

Helder Fraga et al.

Summary: The olive tree is a traditional crop in the Mediterranean Basin, well-adapted to the Mediterranean climate. However, climate change poses new challenges with warming and drying trends threatening olive cultivation. Effective adaptation strategies must be planned to cope with the projected changes.

An Overview of Olive Cultivation in Turkey: Botanical Features, Eco-Physiology and Phytochemical Aspects

Munir Ozturk et al.

Summary: Global climate change, especially global warming, is affecting the efficiency and quality of olive production. Olive trees prefer mild winters, short rainy seasons, and well-drained nutrient-rich soils, but are sensitive to long and dry summers, harsh winters, and air pollutants. Adequate temperature and soil conditions are crucial for optimal growth and fruit yield of olive trees.

Phenolic and lipophilic metabolite adjustments in Olea europaea (olive) trees during drought stress and recovery

Maria Celeste Dias et al.

Summary: This study reveals that metabolite changes play a crucial role in the resilience and recovery of olive plants under multiple stressors such as water deficit and high UVB radiation. Phenolic compounds may act as important reactive oxygen species scavengers, while lipophilic compounds are more relevant during the recovery period.

Coastal submersions in the north-eastern Adriatic during the last 5200 years

David Kaniewski et al.

Summary: In the Mediterranean coastal areas, sea level rise and climate change are likely to increase the frequency of coastal flooding, especially during periods of warmer sea surface temperatures. Studies on the evolution of coastal submersions on the Istrian Peninsula over the past 5200 years suggest that temperature and precipitation may have significant impacts on flooding.
