A computable general equilibrium (CGE) assessment of technological progress and carbon pricing in India's green energy transition via furthering its renewable capacity

Basanta K. Pradhan et al.

Summary: This paper uses a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model to assess the effect of coal cess and technological progress on achieving a target of 40% electric power generation from non-fossil fuel based energy resources by 2030 in India. The study finds that endogenous technological change in renewables, along with the coal cess, can help achieve the low carbon target and bring economic gains. The coal cess can facilitate the shift towards a low carbon economy by reducing the relative prices of non-fossil fuel energy and providing finance for R&D in renewables. Advancements in carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology can also contribute to emission reduction at a lower economic cost. Thus, policy focus on R&D in energy technologies and carbon pricing is crucial for India's low carbon growth.

Centralized vs decentralized solar: A comparison study (India)

Sapan Thapar

Summary: The growth of solar energy in India has been remarkable, surpassing 50 GW of installed capacity. However, most of the solar assets are centralized utility projects, with very few decentralized plants. This study compares centralized and decentralized solar projects in terms of economics, social impact, and technical aspects. The economic assessment shows competitive energy costs near the point of consumption for both types of plants after considering transmission losses and associated charges. On the technical side, a shifting solar curve is observed as the plant locations move from east to west, resulting in an extended window for solar power generation. While centralized projects exclude smaller participants and concentrate assets, decentralized plants promote community participation, generate more employment, and provide energy access for local communities. A balanced policy approach that promotes both types of project configurations is recommended.

Technological changes, financial development and ecological consequences: A comparative study of developed and developing economies

Xiaoxi Liu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between technological changes, financial development, and ecological footprints in developed and developing economies from 1990 to 2019. The findings showed that climate technologies and economic freedom play a significant role in reducing ecological footprints, but their effects vary between the two samples. Financial development leads to higher ecological footprints in developing countries, but this negative influence can be neutralized through the integration of innovative technologies. Economic freedom facilitates the development of innovative technologies and reduces ecological footprints in both samples.

Least-cost targets and avoided fossil fuel capacity in India's pursuit of renewable energy

Ranjit Deshmukh et al.

Summary: India has ambitious targets for wind and solar energy installation by 2030, with solar making up the majority of capacity. The study found that systems with solar photovoltaic comprising 25% to 50% of the total renewable target have the lowest carbon mitigation costs. Contrary to assumptions, meeting high renewable targets in India will reduce the need for new fossil fuel power plants. High renewable energy systems with a majority of wind plants could result in electricity costs similar to fossil fuel-dominated systems.
