Effect of metal and metal oxide engineered nano particles on nitrogen bio-conversion and its mechanism: A review

Yinguang Chen et al.

Summary: This review examines the impact of metal and metal oxide engineered nano particles (MMO-ENPs) on nitrogen transformation processes, revealing negative effects on nitrogen fixation, nitrification, and denitrification, with no promotion effect on Anammox. Factors influencing the effects, alterations in microbial morphology and population structure, and mechanisms involving enzyme inhibition, ROS production, MMO-ENPs, and electron transfer suppression are discussed. Suggestions for future research include focusing on Anammox effects and further mechanistic studies.

Simultaneous bio-reduction of nitrate and Cr(VI) by mechanical milling activated corn straw

Yutian Hu et al.

Summary: In this study, ball milling was used to disrupt the structure of straw, enhancing its availability for the simultaneous bioreduction of nitrate and Cr(VI). The ball milling process changed the composition of organic matter in the straw and increased the release of water-soluble organic matter. Increasing the ball milling time increased the surface area of the straw, promoting microbial adhesion and improving the bioavailability of the energy in the straw.

Bioreduction performance of Cr(VI) by microbial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and the overlooked role of tryptophan

Xianxin Luo et al.

Summary: This study found that extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) play an important role in reducing hexavalent chromium, shedding light on the mechanisms of EPS. The researchers discovered that adding EPS and tryptophan significantly improved the reduction efficiency of hexavalent chromium. These findings provide new insights and strategies for removing heavy metal contamination in future applications.

Responses of anammox process to elevated Fe(III) stress: Reactor performance, microbial community and functional genes

Shaoqing Zhang et al.

Summary: The study indicates that long-term exposure to low concentration Fe(III) can improve the nitrogen removal efficiency of the anammox process, while high Fe(III) concentrations deteriorate reactor performance. Different functional bacteria show varied responses to Fe(III) stress, with high concentrations of Fe(III) significantly altering the anammox community structure.

Application of different redox mediators induced bio-promoters to accelerate the recovery of denitrification and denitrifying functional microorganisms inhibited by transient Cr(VI) shock

Qian Wang et al.

Summary: This study developed four nontoxic bio-promoters to quickly restore the denitrification performance after high-loading Cr(VI) suppressing. Redox mediators induced bio-promoters showed noticeable superiority in releasing bio-inhibition and effectively recovering the abundance of denitrifying microorganisms.

Rapid recovery of inhibited denitrification with cascade Cr(VI) exposure by bio-accelerant: Characterization of chromium distributions, EPS compositions and denitrifying communities

Xu Zhou et al.

Summary: Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) was found to inhibit denitrification in biological wastewater treatment systems, but a biological accelerant was developed to promote denitrification recovery. The addition of accelerant effectively enhanced the removal of NO3- -N, reducing the recovery time and benefiting denitrifiers activities.
