Phytoremediation of Soils Contaminated with Cadmium by Agave americana

Sivakoti Ramana et al.

Summary: Agave americana showed high tolerance to low levels of Cd contamination but significant reduction in biomass at higher levels. Cd mainly accumulated in roots with exclusion mechanism as the principal physiological tolerance mechanism. Due to its reproductive capacity, it is suitable for phytostabilization of Cd-contaminated soils.

Nickel-mediated lead dynamics and their interactive effect on lead partitioning and phytoremediation indices in spinach

Mohan Lal Dotaniya et al.

Summary: A greenhouse research was conducted to study the translocation dynamics of lead (Pb) in spinach mediated by nickel (Ni) application. The study found that increasing Pb application in soil led to a decrease in dry matter yield of plant roots and above-ground biomass. Pb accumulation was observed in both roots and above-ground biomass, with higher accumulation in roots. The application of Ni reduced Pb uptake in spinach roots and above-ground biomass. Furthermore, Ni had a negative impact on various parameters of Pb uptake. The findings of this study have implications for understanding the interaction between Pb and Ni and treating soil contaminated by industrial wastewater.

Root efficiency and water use regulation relating to rooting depth of winter wheat

Haotian Li et al.

Summary: This study found that deep roots can increase soil water availability, regulate the timing of soil water use, and improve crop yield and water productivity. Deep root systems can also enhance leaf photosynthesis and prolong the duration of the greening period, resulting in higher crop yield and water productivity during the reproductive stage. An increase in the root:shoot ratio can increase yield, but excessively high root:shoot ratios can lead to a decrease in grain production per unit. Increasing rooting depth is an effective regulatory measure to increase soil water availability and optimize water consumption allocation, resulting in higher crop yield and water productivity.

Evaluation of biogas production potential of trace element-contaminated plants via anaerobic digestion

Shengxiao Wang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the bioenergy generation capability of plants contaminated with trace metals, showing that different metal elements have varying impacts on biogas production and methane yield. The results indicate that the anaerobic digestion of trace metal contaminated plants has potential for energy production.

Potential of hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) for paired phytoremediation and bioenergy production

Hanah T. Rheay et al.

Summary: Hemp, a multi-use crop, is suitable for phytoremediation and competitive as a feedstock for bioenergy. Combining phytoremediation and bioenergy production from a single hemp crop can overcome economic constraints, but ensuring contaminants are not introduced into the consumer marketplace is a challenge that needs to be addressed.

Tolerance of cotton to elevated levels of Pb and its potential for phytoremediation

Sivakoti Ramana et al.

Summary: The study found that cotton plants have a certain tolerance to lead, but are not suitable as hyperaccumulators of lead. They mainly use an exclusion mechanism to cope with lead stress, and have very low bioconcentration and translocation efficiency for lead.
