Tunable Strong Magnetic Anisotropy in Two-Dimensional van der Waals Antiferromagnets

Feiping Xiao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the anisotropic energy of a 2D antiferromagnet can be greatly enhanced by stacking it on a magnetic substrate layer. This enhancement is due to the sublattice-dependent interlayer magnetic interaction, which defines an effective anisotropic energy. It provides unique ways to control the antiferromagnetic order through the interlayer stacking order and the magnetic order of the substrate layer.

Room-temperature skyrmion lattice in a layered magnet (Fe0.5Co0.5)5GeTe2

Hongrui Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel magnetic ground state, namely Néel-type skyrmion lattice, is observed at room temperature in a single-phase, layered 2D magnet. The relationship between thickness and magnetic domain size follows Kittel's law. The current-induced motion of the skyrmion lattice at room temperature is successfully observed. This discovery provides an important platform for layered device applications and studies of topological and quantum effects in 2D.

A room temperature polar magnetic metal

Hongrui Zhang et al.

Summary: The emergence of long-range magnetic order in noncentrosymmetric compounds has led to the discovery of a polar magnetic metal with unique spin textures and spin transport phenomena. The study reveals a structural transition and the emergence of a polar phase in a wurtzite-structure polar magnetic metal, which exhibits a Ned-type skyrmion lattice and a Rashba-Edelstein effect at room temperature. This discovery provides a promising new framework for investigating intriguing spin topologies and advancing spintronics.

Magnetic structure study of the sawtooth chain antiferromagnet Fe2Se2O

Kazuhiro Nawa et al.

Summary: The magnetic structure of the sawtooth-chain antiferromagnet Fe2Se2O7 was investigated through magnetization measurements, neutron diffraction experiments, and Mossbauer spectra analysis, revealing a nearly collinear antiferromagnetic structure with magnetic moments aligned along the b-axis. The derived magnon dispersion relation suggests the possible flat band nature of magnons.

Tunable high-temperature itinerant antiferromagnetism in a van der Waals magnet

Junho Seo et al.

Summary: The discovery of tunable itinerant ferro- and antiferromagnetism in Co-doped Fe4GeTe2 utilizing vdW interlayer coupling demonstrates strong potential for metallic vdW magnets in vdW spintronic applications. These magnetic properties are sensitive to material composition, allowing for high TN antiferromagnetism in nanoflakes and tunable magnetic anisotropy. The resulting spin configurations and orientations can be effectively controlled by doping, magnetic field, and thickness, and read out through electrical conduction.

Controlling the anisotropy of a van der Waals antiferromagnet with light

Dmytro Afanasiev et al.

Summary: Van der Waals magnets provide a platform for exploring low-dimensional magnetism, and using ultrashort pulses of light, researchers have demonstrated control over magnetic anisotropy in the 2D van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS3. By tuning photon energy in resonance with an orbital transition, they selectively activate a subterahertz magnon mode displaying two-dimensional behavior. The results suggest promising possibilities for manipulating magnetic order in low-dimensional (anti)ferromagnets through orbital resonance excitation.
