Insights into the distribution, partitioning and influencing factors of antibiotics concentration and ecological risk in typical bays of the East China Sea

Summary: This study investigated the distribution, partitioning, and influencing factors of antibiotics in water and sediment in the East China Sea, revealing that water quality has a greater impact on antibiotic partitioning than sediment properties. The study found a positive correlation between antibiotic partitioning and salinity, suspended solids, pH, NH4+-N, and Zn, while a negative correlation with temperature, dissolved oxygen, PO43-, chemical oxygen demand, NO3--N, oil, Cu, and Cd. Ecological risks of antibiotics were mainly posed to Daphnia with low and median chronic toxicity risk, and antibiotics in sediment were more chronically toxic to Daphnia than those in water.

Pharmaceutical pollution of the world's rivers

Summary: Environmental exposure to active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) can have negative effects on ecosystems and human health. A global-scale study of API pollution in rivers highlights the highest concentrations in sub-Saharan Africa, south Asia, and South America, primarily in low- to middle-income countries with poor wastewater and waste management infrastructure. The most frequently detected APIs include carbamazepine, metformin, and caffeine, with some concentrations exceeding safe levels for aquatic organisms. Pharmaceutical pollution poses a global threat to environmental and human health and has implications for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Occurrence, sources and environmental risk assessment of pharmaceuticals in the Sea of Marmara, Turkey

Summary: The occurrence and spatial distribution of selected pharmaceuticals in the Sea of Marmara, Turkey, were investigated. All target pharmaceutical compounds were detected at least once in the study area, with gemfibrozil being the most frequently detected compound at high concentrations. The presence of these compounds in April was higher than in October. Risk assessment results showed that some of these pharmaceuticals pose a high risk to aquatic organisms in the Sea of Marmara.

Contamination, distribution, and risk assessment of antibiotics in the urban surface water of the Pearl River in Guangzhou, South China

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence, seasonal and spatial distributions, potential sources, and ecological risks of 18 targeted antibiotics in the Pearl River located in Guangzhou city. The dominant antibiotics found were sulfonamides, with higher concentrations in the dry season possibly due to dilution effects of heavy rainfall. Municipal wastewater treatment plants were identified as primary sources of antibiotics, with erythromycin-H2O and tetracycline posing high risks to the ecosystem.

Extended suspect screening to identify contaminants of emerging concern in riverine and coastal ecosystems and assessment of environmental risks

Among these suspects, 37 compounds were tentatively identified, with 22 fully confirmed.
