Functionalized polymeric architectures (FPAs) for uranium recovery from oceans: A review on adsorptive approaches, models and spectrophotometry for understanding the interaction mechanism

Amrita Nighojkar et al.

Summary: Uranium, the prime source of nuclear power production, can be extracted from seawater using functionalized polymeric architectures (FPAs). This review analyzes the uranium extraction ability and binding mechanisms of FPAs in real and artificial seawater matrix. The study demonstrates the efficacy of FPAs in sequestering uranium from seawater and highlights the need for further research on complex uranium adsorption behavior in dynamic conditions.

Removal of Zwitterionic PFAS by MXenes: Comparisons withAnionic, Nonionic, and PFAS-Specific Resins

Fuhar Dixit et al.

Summary: This study investigated the removal of selectfluorotelomer zwitterionic per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from natural waters using various resins and Ti3C2MXenes. The results showed that Ti3C2MXenes had the highest removal efficiency and could capture over 75% of the influent zwitterionic PFAS. Ti3C2MXenes also exhibited efficient regeneration and UV-sulfite systems showed promising potential for the treatment of zwitterionic PFAS concentrates.

Nano-fluoro dispersion functionalized superhydrophobic degummed & waste silk fabric for sustained recovery of petroleum oils & organic solvents from wastewater

Prakash M. Gore et al.

Summary: In this study, superwettable and chemically stable waste silk fabric and degummed silk were used for treatment of oily wastewater and oil/solvent recovery. The silk functionalized with a nano-fluoro dispersion showed superhydrophobic and oleophilic properties, demonstrating high filtration efficiencies and permeation flux for oil-water separation. The functionalized silk also exhibited excellent stability in acidic and alkaline mediums, along with thermal stability. The results indicate that nano-fluoro dispersion functionalized silk can be successfully employed for effective oil/solvent-water filtration and treatment of oily wastewater.

Toxic Mechanisms of Five Heavy Metals: Mercury, Lead, Chromium, Cadmium, and Arsenic

Mahdi Balali-Mood et al.

Summary: Industrial activities of the last century have led to increased human exposure to heavy metals such as mercury, lead, chromium, cadmium, and arsenic, resulting in acute or chronic poisonings through water, air, and food. These heavy metals accumulate in the body, causing toxic effects on various tissues and organs by disrupting cellular events and inducing oxidative stress. Common mechanisms of action of these metals include ROS generation, inhibition of antioxidant defense, enzyme inactivation, and selective binding to specific macromolecules, some leading to genomic instability and carcinogenicity through DNA damage and oxidative stress. Despite current knowledge, heavy metal poisoning incidents remain prevalent, necessitating preventive measures and effective treatment, possibly including chelation therapy.
