Carbon Aerogel with High Thermal Conductivity Enabled by Shrinkage Control

Jiaxi Zeng et al.

Summary: Carbon aerogels are commonly used in composites to enhance thermal conductivity, but their low density and high porosity limit the amount of filler loading. Constructing carbon aerogels with a compact skeleton remains a challenge. This study proposes an in situ assembled and post-degas strategy to shrink expanded graphite aerogels, resulting in a densified structure that improves phonon/electron transfer and increases thermal conductivity in composites.

Scalable anisotropic cooling aerogels by additive freeze-casting

Kit-Ying Chan et al.

Summary: Cooling in buildings is crucial for human well-being, but it consumes significant energy. Thermally superinsulating aerogels are promising for energy-efficient cooling, but they tend to absorb sunlight and scaling up their production is challenging. In this study, the authors develop a thermally insulating and solar-reflective anisotropic cooling aerogel panel using a freeze-casting technique, which shows excellent performance in minimizing heat gains and achieving lower interior temperatures.

Rational Design of Soft Yet Elastic Lamellar Graphene Aerogels via Bidirectional Freezing for Ultrasensitive Pressure and Bending Sensors

Peng Min et al.

Summary: The researchers have achieved an ultrahigh sensitivity and low detection limit piezoresistive sensor with lightweight lamellar graphene aerogels (LGAs), which can detect subtle pressure in liquid nitrogen and serve as a sensitive bending sensor for detecting arbitrary bending angles. The sensor is also efficient in detecting biosignals such as wrist pulse and finger bending.

Personal thermal management techniques for thermal comfort and building energy saving

Z. Ma et al.

Summary: Personal thermal management (PTM) technologies, which establish a local thermal envelope around the human body, have great potential for reducing building energy use and improving thermal comfort. Traditional PTM technologies include off-body and on-body devices, while recent advancements in nanotechnologies and materials have led to exploration of novel fibers and textiles. While PTM technologies currently have the potential for significant energy savings in buildings, further research is needed to evaluate thermal comfort for wearable textiles and develop additional performance indices.

3D Lamellar-Structured Graphene Aerogels for Thermal Interface Composites with High Through-Plane Thermal Conductivity and Fracture Toughness

Pengfei Liu et al.

Summary: Lamellar-structured polyamic acid salt/graphene oxide hybrid aerogels were constructed through bidirectional freezing and lyophilization, resulting in high-quality vertically aligned graphene lamellae for superior through-plane thermal conduction capacity. The epoxy composite impregnated with 2.30 vol% of graphene exhibited an outstanding through-plane thermal conductivity of 20.0 W m(-1) K-1, with a record-high specific thermal conductivity enhancement of 4310%, and also showed a high fracture toughness similar to 1.71 times that of epoxy.
