Barriers to integrating lean construction and integrated project delivery (IPD) on construction megaprojects towards the global integrated delivery (GID) in multinational organisations: lean IPD&GID transformative initiatives

Martin Evans et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the barriers to integrating lean construction practices and integrated project delivery (IPD) on construction megaprojects (CMPs) and proposes future of work (FOW) global initiatives. The study finds that the lack of government support for mandatory building information modelling (BIM) and lean construction industry standards and regulations, as well as high costs of BIM software licenses and staff training, are the most significant barriers to integration. The most important barrier clusters are education and knowledge-related barriers, project objectives-related barriers, and attitude-related barriers. Awareness of BIM is higher than lean construction in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

An empirical study on non-physical waste factors in the construction industry

Charles Igwe et al.

Summary: This study identifies and ranks 34 waste factors affecting construction projects in developing countries, revealing ineffective planning and scheduling, rework/repair of defective work, and resource quality problems as the top factors. Factor analysis shows these factors can be grouped into five components, highlighting the need for integrated strategies to overcome them.

Barriers to adopting lean construction in the construction industry: a literature review

Wassim Albalkhy et al.

Summary: This paper identifies and theoretically explains the general barriers to adopting lean construction practices in the construction industry through a systematic literature review. A proposed model classifying sources of the barriers was chosen, revealing that internal environment, labor, materials, and exogenous factors are the main barriers affecting the implementation of lean construction practices. The review provides directions for future research and may help increase understanding and encourage adoption of lean construction practices.

Management of lean waste in a public higher education institution

Leander Luiz Klein et al.

Summary: The paper proposes a lean management framework applied to waste management in public higher education institutions and tests it in a Brazilian HEI. It identifies knowledge loss and over-processing wastes as the most relevant issues to address on university campuses. Prioritizing waste allows universities to organize activities and select tools or practices to create value for final users.

Interactions between Lean Construction Principles and Circular Economy Practices for the Construction Industry

Gabriel Luiz Fritz Benachio et al.

Summary: With the increasing attention to sustainability in the construction industry due to scarcity of resources, the combination of circular economy (CE) and lean construction (LC) concepts may bring benefits. The study found that the LC principle of reducing non-value-adding activities had the most interactions with CE practices, off-site construction practice had the most interactions with LC principles, and the construction stage had the highest average number of interactions across life cycle phases.

Summary: The independent adoption of lean construction and building information modeling (BIM) has shown potential in improving construction industry efficiency, but implementing the lean-BIM theoretical framework remains challenging. A review of 77 papers from the past decade identified 4D BIM-based visualization of construction schedules produced and updated by last planners as a promising interaction, highlighting a lack of sufficiently integrated BIM-Last Planner System(R) framework and technologies.
