Behind electrochromic glazing: Assessing user's perception of glare from the sun in a controlled environment

Sneha Jain et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the level of visible light transmittance required to prevent discomfort glare from the sun through blue tinted low transmittance glazing. The results suggest that a transmittance of 0.6% is sufficient to prevent glare for most users, but may not provide a comfortable situation. To achieve comfortable environments, a transmittance of 0.14% is recommended. For non-critical viewing directions, a transmittance of 0.6% is enough to create visually comfortable spaces for most participants. The study also compares different metrics for discomfort glare and finds that contrast-based metrics show higher correlations compared to saturation-based metrics.

Summary: This paper provides a comprehensive review of the current state-of-the-art coating technologies for glazing applications, comparing static coating technologies like low emissivity and photothermal coatings with dynamic coatings like electrochromic and gasochromic coatings. It highlights the limitations and potential of different technologies, suggesting that passive dynamic hybrid photo-thermochromic coatings may offer the most promising trajectory for future development of durable next-generation dynamic windows.
