Strength and microstructure evolution in cemented mine backfill with low and high pH pyritic tailings: Effect of mineral admixtures

Muhammet Sari et al.

Summary: This study investigates the quality of cemented paste fill (CPB) containing low pH and high pH pyritic tailings. The results show that CPB made with ground blast furnace slag (GBFS) has better strength compared to fly ash (FA) based CPB, regardless of the tailings' pH. The pH of pyritic tailings affects the performance of the fill material. Overall, this study provides important information and technical evidence for the engineering design of a low-cost, zero-waste, and viable mine fill system.

Recycling Dam Tailings as Cemented Mine Backfill: Mechanical and Geotechnical Properties

Tugrul Kasap et al.

Summary: The use of dam tailings as a critical raw material and economic reserve has become widespread recently due to technological advancements. This study investigates the mechanical and geotechnical aspects of employing dam tailings in cemented paste backfill (CPB). The results demonstrate that the strength of CPB increases over time, except for the 56-day cured CPB containing high sulfur minerals. The basicity of CPB and the occupation of voids by hydration products contribute to the observed strength surges.

Physico-chemical and micro-structural behavior of cemented mine backfill: Effect of pH in dam tailings

Tugrul Kasap et al.

Summary: The management of tailings created during ore processing is a challenging task for mining companies and the environment. This study focuses on the usability of dam tailings in cemented mine/paste backfill (CMB/CPB), considering the physico-chemical and micro-structural aspects. The results show that the strength of backfill can be improved by increasing basicity/age, but backfills made with sulfide-rich tailings may experience a decrease in strength. Additionally, the pH values detected by chemical tests can increase or decrease over time due to acid formations and erosions, which play a key role in the deterioration of CPB physically, chemically, and microstructurally.

Using modified quartz sand for phosphate pollution control in cemented phosphogypsum (PG) backfill

Ying Shi et al.

Summary: The addition of modified quartz sand (MQS) can significantly reduce phosphate concentration in backfill, meeting discharge standards in a short time without adverse effects on long-term phosphate release. Furthermore, MQS addition promotes hydration processes, optimizes aggregate gradation, and enhances strength development of backfill.

Radioactive Hazards in Utilization of Industrial By-Products: Comprehensive Review

Pitabash Sahoo et al.

Summary: The rapid increase in demand for natural resources due to industrial growth and urbanization has led to the utilization of industrial by-products as construction materials; research on the physical, chemical, mineralogical, and morphological characteristics of these by-products is essential, while attention should be paid to the presence of hazardous and toxic constituents. Limited research has been done on the radioactivity levels of industrial by-products, and efforts are needed to develop detection methods and solutions for their utilization.
