Conservation and use of genetic resources of cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) by gene banks and nurseries in six Latin American countries

Viviana Ceccarelli et al.

Summary: Cacao is one of the most important cash crops in tropical countries, but the conservation and utilization of its genetic diversity is currently inadequate. This paper examines the state of cacao genetic materials in six countries in South and Central America and identifies the weaknesses and strengths, as well as investment areas for each country. The findings suggest a need for better systems of certification, verification, and traceability, as well as increased utilization of cacao diversity in breeding and selection programs.

How Could the Use of Crop Wild Relatives in Breeding Increase the Adaptation of Crops to Marginal Environments?

Juan Pablo Renzi et al.

Summary: In addition to the use of fertilizers and chemicals, modern breeding has successfully increased agricultural production by cultivating varieties adapted to marginal environments. However, the reduction in genetic diversity through modern breeding has made these varieties more vulnerable to biotic and abiotic challenges.

Species richness, phylogenetic diversity and phylogenetic structure patterns of exotic and native plants along an elevational gradient in the Himalaya

Kumar Manish

Summary: This study finds that in the elevational gradient of the Himalaya, there are differences in distribution patterns between exotic and native plant species, with exotics showing maximum species richness at low elevations and natives predominating at mid-elevations. Native species assemblages exhibit higher phylogenetic diversity than exotic species assemblages across the entire elevational gradient.

Summary: This study utilized SNP markers to identify new QTL associated with frosty pod rot and black pod rot resistance in cacao, confirming previously reported QTL on certain chromosomes. Additionally, several new resistance QTL regions were identified, along with the expression of related genes within these regions.

Dissecting industrial fermentations of fine flavour cocoa through metagenomic analysis

Miguel Fernandez-Nino et al.

Summary: The global demand for fine-flavour cocoa has increased, and this study used metagenomic approaches to dissect on-farm industrial fermentations of fine-flavour cocoa. The results revealed a core of nine dominant microorganisms shared between two farms located in different agro-ecological zones. Additionally, a community metabolic model was proposed to elucidate the interactions among microorganisms and flavour biochemistry.

Phylogenetic diversity and conservation of crop wild relatives in Colombia

Carlos E. Gonzalez-Orozco et al.

Summary: This study examines the distribution and conservation status of crop wild relatives in Colombia, finding that areas with the highest phylogenetic diversity are mainly located in the northern part of the Andes and the Pacific region. Priority levels for conservation actions are categorized based on the phylogenetic diversity of species, with high priority species mainly found in these high diversity regions.
