Physically Cross-Linked Polybutadiene by Quadruple Hydrogen Bonding through Side-Chain Incorporation of Ureidopyrimidinone with Branched Alkyl Side Chains

Jente Verjans et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the synthesis of a supramolecular polymer network based on ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) starting from a low-molecular weight polybutadiene (PB) polymer. The UPy units contain a branched alkyl side chain to enhance compatibility with the PB polymer matrix. Different degrees of UPy functionalization on PB result in materials with varying glass transition temperatures and material properties. The study emphasizes the importance of designing supramolecular physical cross-linker units with branched aliphatic side chains for enhancing compatibility with the polymer matrix.

Waste tire rubber devulcanization technologies: State-of-the-art, limitations and future perspectives

Paulina Wisniewska et al.

Summary: Waste tire management is a major global environmental issue, and finding low-cost and industrial-scale tire recycling methods is gaining more attention. The sustainable development of rubber devulcanization technologies and the appropriate design of cradle-to-cradle loops for rubber goods are considered promising strategies for achieving a higher level of rubber recycling. This work presents an overview of patented waste tire rubber devulcanization technologies and discusses their performance characteristics, environmental aspects, and limitations. The findings show that the reclaimed rubbers described in patents have higher tensile strength and elongation break compared to literature data or commercial products, with significant differences attributed to devulcanization efficiency and rubber treatment conditions. Considering environmental and economic aspects, reactive extrusion is identified as the most promising method for further developing rubber devulcanization technologies.

Inverse Vulcanization of Vinyltriethoxysilane: A Novel Interfacial Coupling Agent for Silica-Filled Rubber Composites

Dong Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents a facile synthesis method for alkoxysilyl-functionalized polysulfides (SPVs) and their application as interfacial modifiers in silica-filled rubber composites. Compared to traditional sulfur-containing silane coupling agents, SPVs exhibit better interfacial adhesion and silica dispersion, leading to improved composite properties.

Photoinduced inverse vulcanization

Jinhong Jia et al.

Summary: Inverse vulcanization (IV) is a technique that converts elemental sulfur into sulfur-rich functional polymers. Previous methods required harsh reaction conditions, limiting the range of feasible crosslinkers. This study introduces a new photoinduced IV method that allows reaction at ambient temperatures, significantly expanding the range of substrates and products, and providing sustainable alternatives for environmentally harmful plastics.

Amphiphilic Silicon Hydroxyl-Functionalized cis-Polybutadiene: Synthesis, Characterization, and Properties

Yingying Zheng et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the successful synthesis of living cis-polybutadiene chains with desired molecular weights through polymerization process or sequential addition of an extra monomer, leading to the formation of amphiphilic silicon hydroxyl-functionalized cis-PB. Star-shaped cis-PBs are formed through self-assembly via hydrogen bonding from -Si(OH)3 groups, with surface transformation from hydrophobic to hydrophilic observed after water induction in lower molecular weight cis-PB segments. The hydrophilic cis-PB-Si(OH)3 films show good self-healing behavior, suggesting potential applications in recyclable elastomers and self-healing elastic coatings with low-temperature resistance.

Synthesis of Functionalized Styrene Butadiene Rubber and Its Applications in SBR-Silica Composites for High Performance Tire Applications

Ritesh J. Dhanorkar et al.

Summary: Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) is commonly synthesized from 1,3-butadiene and styrene monomers via two synthetic pathways, emulsion (ESBR) and solution (SSBR). SSBR is gradually replacing ESBR in the world market due to its high demand for high-performance tires. Functionalized emulsion-based SBR (FESBR) can be comparable to SSBR in making high-performance tires, and offers similar performance benefits.
