Thermal behavior, synergistic effect and thermodynamic parameter evaluations of biomass/plastics co-pyrolysis in a concentrating photothermal TGA

Abdulmajid Abdullahi Shagali et al.

Summary: The heating rate has a significant impact on the pyrolysis process, especially for reactions involving the co-pyrolysis of biomass and plastic. The synergistic effects of the blend samples are concentrated in the main decomposition region, and the co-pyrolysis process requires less activation energy compared to the pyrolysis of plastic alone.

Kinetic parameters underlying hematite-assisted decomposition of tribromophenol

Labeeb Ali et al.

Summary: The interaction between brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and transition metal oxides is widely used in the thermal recycling of bromine-contaminated plastics. This study investigated the thermal degradation behavior of hematite (Fe2O3): tribromophenol (TBP) mixtures during co-pyrolysis and co-combustion using a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The obtained thermo-kinetic parameters provide insights into the reduction of activation energy by hematite and the mechanism of debromination of TBP. The results have direct applications in reactor modeling and heat transfer design for the recycling of electronic waste.

Investigation on the formation mechanism of main products from TBBPA pyrolysis using DFT method

Xin Mu et al.

Summary: The formation mechanisms of the main pyrolysis products of TBBPA were studied using density functional theory. The effects of H and Br radicals on the formation mechanism were analyzed. Various possible reaction pathways and thermodynamic parameters were presented. The results showed that HBr can be produced continuously during the pyrolysis of TBBPA, and combination and abstraction reactions are the main ways for its generation. The optimal pattern for debromination was found to be Br atom abstraction by H radical.

Temperature-dependent profiles of dioxin-like toxicants from combustion of brominated flame retardants

Mohammednoor Altarawneh

Summary: This study constructed a chemical kinetic model to explain the homogeneous gas-phase emission of Br-aromatic pollutants from the oxidative thermal decomposition of a monobromobenzene molecule. The model predicts the temperature-dependent profiles of PBDD/Fs isomers and the highest abundance of Br dioxin-like compounds in a narrow temperature window. By providing insight into the potential emission inventories of Br-compounds in the gas phase, the model allows for a survey and fine-tuning of operational conditions to reduce the emission of Br-notorious pollutants.

Catalytic upgrading of coal volatiles with Fe2O3 and hematite by TG-FTIR and Py-GC/MS

Qiang Song et al.

Summary: This study investigated the catalytic upgrading of rapid coal pyrolysis using waste hematite. The performances, kinetic parameters, and volatile composition of coal pyrolysis with Fe2O3 and hematite were compared using TG-FTIR and Py-GC/MS. The results showed that iron-based catalysts increased the weight loss rate of coal pyrolysis and reduced the apparent activation energy. The presence of Fe2O3 and hematite also led to a reduction in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and oxygenates in the coal.

Waste LEDs in China: Generation estimation and potential recycling benefits

Xi Tian et al.

Summary: With the popularization of LED devices, the amount of waste LEDs is expected to increase rapidly. However, recycling policies and chains are lagging due to insufficient knowledge about waste generation and recycling benefits. This study estimated the sales of LED devices in China and used a Weibull lifetime distribution model to quantify waste generation and in-use stock of LEDs. The potential economic and environmental benefits of recycling were explored. Results showed that the in-use stock of LEDs will increase significantly and waste generation will also increase. The potential economic benefits of recycling in 2025 will mainly come from precious metals, and carbon emissions can be reduced through recycling.

Leicheng Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that melamine and its derivatives are present in dust and hand wipe samples, with higher levels in samples collected from e-waste dismantling workshops. Cyanuric acid dominated in hand wipe samples, possibly due to increased use of disinfection products during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dust ingestion is an important exposure pathway for dismantling workers and the general population, while hand-to-mouth contact is also important in certain populations.

Summary: Research has shown that the formation of brominated alkanes is the main result when transition metal oxides react with BFRs in e-waste treatment. Experimental and simulation studies have revealed that hematite has a low cracking capacity under pyrolytic conditions, leading to a decrease in escaped HBr concentrations. Additionally, density functional theory calculations have mapped out important reaction pathways in the initial degradation of the TBP molecule.
