The Enhancement of Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy of Escherichia Coli by a Functionalized Combination of Photosensitizers: In Vitro Examination of Single Cells by Quantitative Phase Imaging

Aleksandra Pietrowska et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is a promising alternative for preventing infections as bacteria cannot develop resistance to aPDT. This study demonstrated an approach to enhance aPDT effectiveness by increasing the accumulation of photosensitizers within bacterial cells using a combination of Chlorin e6 and Pheophorbide. Digital holotomography (DHT) was used to investigate the accumulation of photosensitizers and changes in the density of single-cell bacteria before and after aPDT treatment.

3,3′-Diindolylmethane Supplementation Maintains Oocyte Quality by Reducing Oxidative Stress and CEP-1/p53-Mediated Regulation of Germ Cells in a Reproductively Aged Caenorhabditis elegans Model

Mijin Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM) on oocyte quality and reproductive aging were investigated in a model organism. DIM was found to improve mitochondrial function, reduce oxidative stress, and decrease chromosomal aberrations in aged oocytes, leading to improved fertility. Additionally, DIM supplementation maintained proper levels of germ cell apoptosis and proliferation, further delaying the onset of reproductive aging.

Natural photosensitizers from Tripterygium wilfordii and their antimicrobial photodynamic therapeutic effects in a Caenorhabditis elegans model

Seemi Tasnim Alam et al.

Summary: The extract and photosensitizer-enriched fraction of Tripterygium wilfordii showed effective antimicrobial photodynamic treatment (APDT) effects, particularly against Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and Candida albicans. Additionally, the photosensitizers were able to induce intracellular ROS production and showed strong APDT activity against skin pathogens like Staphylococcus epidermidis and Streptococcus pyogenes. Overall, the use of TWE and TW-F5 in APDT was found to be successful in controlling pathogenic bacteria.

Phenolic acid metabolites of polyphenols act as inductors for hormesis in C. elegans

Benjamin Dilberger et al.

Summary: The study found that protocatechuic acid, gallic acid, and vanillic acid can significantly increase the lifespan, heat-stress resistance, and chemotaxis of Caenorhabditis elegans, while activating longevity pathways. However, vanillic acid also decreases ATP concentrations in aged nematodes. The investigated phenolic acids were unable to affect mitochondrial performance, suggesting a hormetic mode of action, especially through activation of the sirtuin pathway.
