Shear-induced migration of confined flexible fibers

Nan Xue et al.

Summary: The experimental study investigates the shear-induced migration of flexible fibers in suspensions confined between two parallel plates. The migration of fibers is found to be related to their flexibility and the shear stress, with softer fibers and stronger shear stresses leading to faster migration. As the dimensionless parameter ?(eff) increases, fibers tend to align in the flow direction and exhibit more bending behavior towards the center plane.

Chain Assembly Kinetics from Magnetic Colloidal Spheres

Ramona Mhanna et al.

Summary: Magnetic colloidal chains are a versatile microrobotic system with promising applications, known for their biocompatibility and ease of manipulation under magnetic fields. The synthesis of these chains involves controlling their quality, length, and flexibility through various parameters such as linker concentration, reaction temperature, and magnetic field strength. The research findings show that the fabrication process of these chains can be accurately described by the Flory-Schulz model, resembling step-growth polymerization. Furthermore, under optimized conditions, long and flexible colloidal chains with significantly reduced bending modulus compared to previous studies have been successfully synthesized, demonstrating potential for investigating actuation, assembly, and folding behaviors of these polymer analogues.

Settling dynamics of Brownian chains in viscous fluids

Lucas H. P. Cunha et al.

Summary: We investigate the dynamics of sedimenting Brownian filaments using experimental, computational, and theoretical approaches. The filaments composed of linked colloidal particles exhibit bending and rotation under the influence of nonlocal hydrodynamic interactions and thermal forces. Different reorientation mechanisms are found for different flexibility regimes, while chain flexibility plays an important role in lateral migration. The interplay between elastic, gravitational, and thermal forces has significant secondary effects on the settling dynamics of the filaments.

Perspectives on viscoelastic flow instabilities and elastic turbulence

Superparamagnetic colloids in a rotating field: Transition state from chains to disks

F. Mignolet et al.

Summary: When subjected to an external magnetic field, 2D layers of superparamagnetic colloids form specific structures, such as chains and disklike clusters. It was observed that the colloids aggregate into rotating chains before clustering into disklike structures. Over time, these chains interact with each other and aggregate into disklike clusters.

Universal features of the shape of elastic fibres in shear flow

Pawel J. Zuk et al.

Summary: A numerical study of an elastic fiber in a shear flow at low Reynolds number was conducted, where different theoretical schemes were applied to understand the motion of the fiber. The results showed that the bending, curling, and rotation of the fiber, depending on its length and stiffness, determined the overall motion and shape evolution. The numerical findings were further supported by an interpretation using an elastica model.

Spectral Universality of Elastoinertial Turbulence

Sami Yamani et al.

Summary: Dissolving small amounts of polymer into a Newtonian fluid can significantly change the dynamics of transitional and turbulent flows. Under high levels of viscoelasticity, a new distinct transitional pathway to elastoinertial turbulence (EIT) is identified, with a universality in the power-law spectral decay of EIT with frequency, f(-3), independent of fluid rheology and flow parameters.

Hierarchical assemblies of superparamagnetic colloids in time-varying magnetic fields

Aldo Spatafora-Salazar et al.

Summary: Magnetic-guided colloidal assembly has been proven to be a versatile method for building hierarchical particle assemblies with increasing complexity and novel dynamics. By controlling dipolar interactions in static and time-varying magnetic fields, different hierarchical structures like 1-D chains, 2-D networks, and 2-D clusters can be formed, displaying a variety of dynamic phenomena.
