Are women the more empathetic gender? The effects of gender role expectations

Charlotte S. Loeffler et al.

Summary: This research aims to explore the relationship between self-perceived empathy and traditional gender roles, focusing on the contextual conditions under which gender differences in empathy can emerge or disappear. The findings show that women rate themselves higher in empathy than men across all experimental conditions, whereas objective female superiority in emotion recognition is only evident in one condition. Additionally, the study reveals that gender-role orientation mediates the association between gender and self-reported empathic capacity.

Is the Putative Mirror Neuron System Associated with Empathy? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Soukayna Bekkali et al.

Summary: Theoretical perspectives suggest that the mirror neuron system is an important neurobiological factor in empathy, but empirical support is mixed. A review of existing studies found moderate correlations between emotional and cognitive empathy with MNS activity, although results varied across techniques used. Few studies investigated motor empathy, with no significant relationships found.

Enhanced Neural Empathic Responses in Patients with Spino-Bulbar Muscular Atrophy: An Electrophysiological Study

Arianna Palmieri et al.

Summary: This study investigated the neural empathic responses in patients with spino-bulbar muscular atrophy, finding significantly enhanced experience-sharing neural responses in patients compared to healthy controls during an empathy task. While there were no differences in dispositional and explicit empathic self-ratings, conservative event-related potentials analyses revealed distinct neural responses in patients.

Dump the ?dimorphism?: Comprehensive synthesis of human brain studies reveals few male-female differences beyond size

Lise Eliot et al.

Summary: Despite larger male brains and some structural differences, sex/gender only explains about 1% of total variance in brain differences, with connectome differences and multivariate sex/gender prediction showing poor performance across diverse populations. Task-based fMRI has failed to find reproducible activation differences between men and women due to high rates of false discovery. Overall, male/female brain differences appear trivial and population-specific, with the human brain not being "sexually dimorphic".

The hers and his of prosociality across 10 countries

Maria I. T. Olsson et al.

Summary: There are negligible differences between women and men in prosocial self-perceptions, but substantial gender variations in prosocial behavioural intentions and behaviours in different help contexts, such as same- vs. other-gender interactions. The findings suggest that gender differences in prosociality are dynamic and contextual, with women showing greater prosocial behavioural intentions towards same-gender recipients and men reporting higher intentions towards other-gender recipients.
