Noble Metal Based Electrocatalysts for Alcohol Oxidation Reactions in Alkaline Media

Xiaoyang Fu et al.

Summary: This minireview provides a brief introduction to the fundamental challenges associated with anode alcohol oxidation reaction (AOR) in alkaline direct alcohol fuel cells (ADAFCs), as well as the key performance metrics and evaluation protocols for benchmarking AOR electrocatalysts. Recent advances in noble-metal based AOR electrocatalysts, such as Pt, Pd, and Rh, are summarized with a focus on design criteria for improving specific activity and electrochemical surface area to achieve high mass activity and long term durability. Strategies to enhance Faradaic efficiency and reduce overpotential are also discussed. The article concludes with a brief perspective on future challenges and opportunities.

Tailoring Amorphous PdCu Nanostructures for Efficient C-C Cleavage in Ethanol Electrooxidation

Weicong Wang et al.

Summary: This study reports the use of amorphous PdCu nanomaterials as superior electrocatalysts for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). The amorphization of PdCu catalysts improves catalytic efficiency and tailoring the size and shape further enhances activity. Both isotropic structure and one-dimensional shape also improve catalyst durability.

Electron density regulation of Pt-Co nanoalloys via P incorporation towards methanol electrooxidation

Niuwa Yang et al.

Summary: The activity of Pt catalysts for the electro-oxidation of methanol can be greatly enhanced by coupling the electron effect with morphological engineering. The P doping not only changes the electron density around Pt atoms, but also alters the original morphology of the alloy precursors. The as-prepared ternary Pt3CoPn nanoparticles with branched morphologies exhibit high activity for methanol oxidation.

Phase-Controlled Synthesis of Pd-Se Nanocrystals for Phase-Dependent Oxygen Reduction Catalysis

Zhiyong Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, active and stable Pd-Se alloy electrocatalysts with controlled phase for alkaline ORR were explored, showing that Pd17Se15 NPs/C exhibit much better ORR performance compared to Pd17Se4 NPs/C, commercial Pd/C, and Pt/C. The enhanced activity is attributed to the stronger oxygenated species adsorption capacity of Pd in Pd17Se15, leading to more charge transfer from the surface to the *OOH intermediate as revealed by DFT analysis.
