Coexisting Kondo hybridization and itinerant f-electron ferromagnetism in UGe2

Ioannis Giannakis et al.

Summary: The Kondo hybridization in UGe2, a heavy fermion system, leads to the formation of two ferromagnetic phases accompanied by spin-triplet superconductivity. Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy reveal the presence of Kondo resonance and sharp 5f-electron states at high temperatures. The resonance narrows and splits, causing the itinerant f-electron spectral weight to disappear at the Fermi energy as the temperature decreases.

Comparative study of adsorptions, reactions and electronic properties of U atoms on Cu(111), Ag(111), Au(111) and Ru(0001) surfaces

Wei Feng et al.

Summary: This study comparatively investigated the adsorptions, reactions, and electronic properties of individual U atoms on Cu(111), Ag(111), Au(111), and Ru(0001) surfaces for the first time. U atoms exhibited different adsorption behaviors and tendencies to produce surface vacancies on different metal surfaces.

Crossover behavior of the localized to itinerant transition of 5f electrons in the antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice USb2

W. Feng et al.

Summary: In uranium-based heavy fermion systems, the intermediate character of 5 f electrons between partial localization and partial itinerancy complicates the Kondo problem. Temperature-dependent dI/dV spectra reveal peak structures around the Fermi level originating from hybridization between conduction and 5 f electrons. The previously reported mysterious abrupt change in electronic state at 45 K was not observed, instead only a continuous evolution of dI/dV spectra with temperature was observed.
