Petrographic characterization and durability of carbonate stones used in UNESCO World Heritage Sites in northeastern Italy

Silvia Salvini et al.

Summary: This paper characterizes the petrographic and textural features of ornamental limestones commonly used in UNESCO World Heritage Sites in northeastern Italy, and evaluates the main factors causing their decay in the employed environment. Eleven carbonate building materials were studied, and their durability was measured through accelerated aging tests. The petrographic and textural features, as well as the porosity of these carbonate rocks, strongly influenced their deterioration rate, and understanding these features is essential for predicting stone decay.

Assessment of new spectral indices and multi-seasonal ASTER data for gypsum mapping

Shuang Shuai et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility of using 2.26 μm reflectance absorption for gypsum mapping and proposed two new gypsum spectral indices to effectively exclude interference from other minerals. The seasonal reflectance variability of gypsum formation pixels was found to impact the classification accuracy of gypsum indices.

Roman brick production technologies in Padua (Northern Italy) along the Late Antiquity and Medieval Times: Durable bricks on high humid environs

Elena Mercedes Perez-Monserrat et al.

Summary: The production technologies of bricks in Padua during Roman to Medieval times were investigated using various analytical methods. The study revealed differences in the materials and firing degree of the bricks. The color of the bricks can serve as an identifier for different construction periods in the city.

A discussion on sea level rise, rate ad acceleration. Venice as a case study

Dario Camuffo

Summary: This paper discusses the equations used to represent sea level rise and uses the case study of Venice to compare the quadratic and exponential equations. It finds that the quadratic equation represents a climate with constant forcing factors, while the exponential equation represents a dynamic condition with increasing forcing factors and acceleration. The paper also discusses mathematical formulas, physical consequences, and extrapolates the trend forecast for sea level rise in Venice.

Four centuries of documentary sources concerning the sea level rise in Venice

Dario Camuffo

Summary: Four centuries of written sources on sea level rise in Venice were analyzed to study potential proxies, with only two cases having complete information for quantitative sea level values. The study advanced knowledge in history of science and recovered scientific data, with Zendrini's case in 1821 providing a benchmark for sea level values. This research is also compared with a multiproxy sea level rise reconstruction for the 1350-2016 period.
