Oxygen-Enhanced Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization through the Formation of a Copper Superoxido Complex

Kostas Parkatzidis et al.

Summary: In controlled radical polymerization, oxygen is typically seen as undesirable, but in this study, it was found that oxygen can actually trigger a faster and more efficient polymerization reaction. By using a special mechanism called superoxido ARGET-ATRP, the researchers achieved high-end group fidelity and near-quantitative conversions in all steps of the reaction. The method showed versatile applications and was not affected by the purity of the starting catalyst, even with a highly oxidized reagent.

Coffee Beverage: A New Strategy for the Synthesis of Polymethacrylates via ATRP

Karolina Surmacz et al.

Summary: In this study, coffee was used as an activator for polymerization reactions without the need for an additional reducing agent. The results showed that using a solution obtained from a mixture of Arabica and Robusta beans allowed for the synthesis of high molecular weight polymer products in a short time while maintaining a controlled structure. The proposed concept was tested with various hydrophilic monomers and the molar concentration of caffeine in applied beverages was determined.

Nitroxide-mediated polymerization of styrene and limonene in the framework of synthesis of potentially functional polymers using naturally occurring terpenes

Eleftherios G. Andriotis et al.

Summary: The incorporation of limonene in the polymer chains can reduce the average molecular weight, while acting as a radical scavenger to inhibit styrene thermal auto-polymerization at high temperatures. In the absence of styrene monomer, limonene can result in the functionalization of polystyrene. This functionalization can be extended to the synthesis of novel materials based on naturally occurring terpenes using NMP.

ATRP-ARGET of a Styrene Monomer onto Modified Natural Rubber Latex as an Initiator

Quentin Tevenot et al.

Summary: In this study, ATRP-ARGET was used to graft polymerization of styrene onto natural rubber in the latex stage as a heterogeneous system. The particles were characterized by H-1 NMR spectroscopy and SEC, confirming the success of graft copolymerization. The resulting grafted polystyrene exhibited living radical behavior, showing a linear evolution of molecular weight versus monomer conversion and a high grafting efficiency with a narrow molecular weight distribution.

Unusual Cross-Linked Polystyrene by Copper-Catalyzed ARGET ATRP Using a Bifunctional Initiator and No Cross-Linking Agent

Niccolo Braidi et al.

Summary: An anomalous polystyrene gel was obtained during the copper-catalyzed activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (ARGET ATRP) of styrene at 60-70 degrees C, using ascorbic acid/Na2CO3 as the reducing system and EtOAc/EtOH as the solvent mixture. The phenomenon of anomalous PS branching is closely related to reaction conditions such as temperature and the use of a bifunctional initiator, and the intensity of branching/cross-linking can be influenced by the presence of Cu-II or the chain polymerization rate.

Low ppm CuBr-Triggered Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization under Mild Conditions

Richard Whitfield et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that ppm concentrations of CuBr can efficiently trigger ATRP reactions at ambient temperature, achieving high polymerization efficiency and low molecular weight distributions. Excess ligand ensures high end-group fidelity, and experiments in various solvents show that dimethylsulfoxide is the most effective solvent for the reaction.

Polymer Brush-Based Thin Films via Cu(0)-Mediated Surface-Initiated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization for Sensing Applications

Andres B. Sanchez-Alvarado et al.

Summary: Nanomaterial-based hybrid devices have shown potential in environmental contaminant sensing, where polymer thin films are exploited as functional sensing materials. Covalently functionalized polymer films, produced through surface-initiated polymerizations, offer stability and the ability to tailor thickness. Copper-mediated CRP is a rapid technique that enhances the characteristics of surface-grafting polymer films for hybrid sensor devices.

Summary: Ascorbic acid is an abundant antioxidant in the lung, playing a key role in biological responses to particulate air pollution. Iron and copper reactions with ascorbic acid are important sinks for the compound, with catalytic rather than redox reactions at play. Rate constants for these reactions are derived from laboratory measurements.

Copper-catalyzed ARGET ATRP of styrene from ethyl α-haloisobutyrate in EtOAc/EtOH, using ascorbic acid/Na2CO3 as reducing system

Marco Borsari et al.

Summary: ARGET ATRP of styrene was conducted using various carbonates as reducing agents, with or without ascorbic acid (AA), in a solvent mixture of EtOAc and EtOH. The system showed high yields and low dispersities with low amounts of catalyst and moderate reaction times, with the Cl-ATRP system providing excellent results. NMR spectroscopy and kinetic analyses confirmed the livingness of the final polymer chains.

Summary: This study demonstrated a simple and scalable method of grafting various hydrophobic polymer brushes onto organic/inorganic substrates using water-accelerated paint-on SI-ATRP. Uniform hydrophobic polymer brushes with adjustable levels of hydrophobicity could be easily grafted from substrates in a short reaction time, showing potential for applications in liquid repellency, antismudge/self-cleaning, and anti-icing properties.
