Plasticity in the developing brain: neurophysiological basis for lesion-induced motor reorganization

Mitchell Batschelett et al.

Summary: The plasticity of the developing brain can be observed following injury to the motor cortex and/or corticospinal tracts. Factors such as the timing of injury, lesion size and lesion location may affect the brain's ability to acquire bilateral motor representation. Additionally, acquired injuries show a higher prevalence of bilateral motor representation compared to developmental disorders.

Outcome Prediction and Inter-Rater Comparison of Four Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scoring Systems of Infants with Perinatal Asphyxia and Therapeutic Hypothermia

Juliette F. Langeslag et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine which MRI scoring system best predicts adverse outcomes in term infants with perinatal asphyxia at 24 months of age, and has the highest inter-rater reliability. The results showed that all four MRI scoring systems had good predictive accuracy for adverse outcomes, with the Weeke and Trivedi scores demonstrating the highest inter-rater reliability. Using high-quality MRI scans further improved prediction.

Limitations of Conventional Magnetic Resonance Imaging as a Predictor of Death or Disability Following Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy in the Late Hypothermia Trial

Abbot R. Laptook et al.

Summary: MRI injury scores were associated with neurodevelopmental outcome at 18-22 months among infants in the Late Hypothermia Trial. However, the results suggest caution when using qualitative interpretations of MRI images to provide prognostic information to families following perinatal hypoxia-ischemia.

MRI Score Ability to Detect Abnormalities in Mild Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy

Michelle Machie et al.

Summary: This study compared the ability of three MRI scores to detect abnormalities in infants with mild HIE, with the Weeke score showing the highest frequency of detecting subtle injuries due to mild HIE. Inter-rater reliability was excellent for all three scores.

MRI combined with early clinical variables are excellent outcome predictors for newborn infants undergoing therapeutic hypothermia after perinatal asphyxia

Marianne Thoresen et al.

Summary: Binary logistic regression using WMxBGT or TIS along with clinical variables provides excellent outcome prediction for infants with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy, outperforming single variable cross-tabulation methods.
