Land use changes biomass and temporal patterns of insect cross-ecosystem flows

Katharina Ohler et al.

Summary: Land use affects the biomass and composition of emergent aquatic insects, with higher biomass and abundance in agricultural sites. However, the composition of insect species is different between agricultural and forest sites, with shorter generation time insects being more common in agriculture. The timing and abundance of insect emergence vary between different orders in agriculture compared to forest, and this is influenced by pesticide toxicity and electrical conductivity.

Outside the Safe Operating Space of the Planetary Boundary for Novel Entities

Linn Persson et al.

Summary: This article suggests that the safe operating space of the planetary boundary for novel entities is exceeded due to the increasing production and releases exceeding the global capacity for assessment and monitoring. Plastic pollution is highlighted as a major concern. The article presents an impact pathway from the production of novel entities to their impacts on Earth system processes and proposes several criteria for control variables. Urgent action is recommended to reduce the harm associated with exceeding the boundary by reducing the production and releases of novel entities.

Parasite infection influences the biomarker response and locomotor activity of Gammarus fossarum exposed to conventionally-treated wastewater

Louisa E. Rothe et al.

Summary: Modern wastewater treatment plants cannot completely remove micropollutants, such as pharmaceuticals and pesticides, from effluents entering the aquatic environment. The study found that the response of the freshwater amphipod Gammarus fossarum to different exposure conditions was mainly driven by parasite infection. This suggests that parasites may act as additional biotic stressors in multiple stressor scenarios, playing an important role in the response of organisms to chemical stressors. Future ecotoxicological studies and assessments should consider parasite infection as an additional test parameter.

Small-scale population structuring results in differential susceptibility to pesticide exposure

Martin Grethlein et al.

Summary: This study examines the population structure and phenotypic differentiation of Gammarus fossarum clade 11, a crustacean species in Central European riverine networks. The researchers find stable population structure over time and observe differences in susceptibility to a pesticide. These findings suggest that limited dispersal capacity is reflected not only in population structure but also in small-scale variation in susceptibility to anthropogenic disturbance.

The Role of Behavioral Ecotoxicology in Environmental Protection

Alex T. Ford et al.

Summary: Chemicals have long been acknowledged to impact human and wildlife behavior. Recent technological advancements have highlighted the adverse effects of contaminants on organismal behavior and ecological outcomes. Concerns about the lack of consideration of behavior in regulatory ecotoxicology have led to the exclusion of many studies from chemical risk assessments. A workshop with international representatives has resulted in consensus perspectives and recommendations to improve the integration of basic and translational sciences with regulatory practices.
