Lead isotopic fingerprinting of 250-years of industrial era pollution in Greenland ice

Sophia M. Wensman et al.

Summary: This article presents a high-resolution, 1759-2008 record of lead isotopes measured in a central Greenland ice core. The study provides detailed tracing of lead pollution from mid-latitude industrial activities over a 250-year period. The results suggest that mining and coal combustion in England, Scotland, and Wales were the dominant sources of lead pollution prior to the mid-19th century. The expansion of coal consumption in Europe and North America led to rapid increases in lead levels and changes in lead isotope ratios. The smelting of Australian Broken Hill lead ores in Europe and long-range transport from Asia also influenced the lead isotope signatures.

The Safe Urban Harvests Study: A Community-Driven Cross-Sectional Assessment of Metals in Soil, Irrigation Water, and Produce from Urban Farms and Gardens in Baltimore, Maryland

Sara N. Lupolt et al.

Summary: The study found that the mean concentrations of all measured metals in irrigation water were below public health guidelines, indicating that there is no need to worry about heavy metal contamination. Additionally, the mean concentrations of nonessential metals in growing area soils were below public health guidelines, suggesting that urban agriculture may be safer than previously thought.

Blood Lead Levels in US Children Ages 1-11 Years, 1976-2016

Kathryn B. Egan et al.

Summary: Blood lead levels in U.S. children ages 1-11 y have substantially decreased over the past 40 years, but approximately 385,775 children still had BLLs greater than or equal to the CDC blood lead reference value of 5 μg/dL in the most recent period (2011-2016). Higher blood lead levels are consistently associated with risk factors such as non-Hispanic Black race/ethnicity, lower family income-to-poverty-ratio, and older housing age.
