Lauric acid bilayer-functionalized iron oxide nanoparticles disrupt early development of freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata (Say, 1818)

Rafael Veloso Pena et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the toxicity of lauric acid bilayer-functionalized iron oxide nanoparticles (LAIONPs) in gastropods and found that it caused toxicity, hatching inhibition, and morphological changes in snail embryos, with higher toxicity observed in newly-hatched snails. Lauric acid exhibited higher toxicity compared to LAIONPs and iron ions. The results showed the molluscicidal activity of LAIONPs and isolated lauric acid, suggesting their potential use in snail control programs.

Effects of iron oxide nanoparticles on phenotype and metabolite changes in hemp clones (Cannabis sativa L.)

Canhui Deng et al.

Summary: The study showed that Fe3O4 NPs can promote hemp growth and decrease THC content, especially at low doses. NPs also affect plant growth and metabolism by activating the defense system and inducing metabolic reprogramming in hemp plants.

Toxicological effects of different ionic liquids on growth, photosynthetic pigments, oxidative stress, and ultrastructure of Nostoc punctiforme and the combined toxicity with heavy metals

Linglong Chu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxicity of ionic liquids (ILs) on the edible algae Nostoc punctiforme, showing that ILs adversely affect the growth and photosynthesis of the algae and reduce its nutritional value. ILs generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) that damage enzyme structure and function, and also cause cell ultrastructure changes. The combined effect of heavy metals and ILs further increases the toxicity to Nostoc punctiforme.

Biogenic iron oxide nanoparticles and activated sodium persulphate for hydrocarbon remediation in contaminated soil

Oladotun P. Bolade et al.

Summary: Biogenic iron oxide nanoparticles synthesized from the plant Azadirachta indica were used synergistically with sodium persulphate to degrade total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in contaminated soil. A chemometric approach and various characterization techniques were used to optimize the degradation conditions for TPH, achieving complete degradation under specific pH and oxidant dosage. The study demonstrated the successful catalytic effect of the FeNP synthesized using A. indica in achieving complete degradation of TPH in crude oil-contaminated soil.
