Green synthesis of reduced graphene oxide and their use on column adsorption of phenol from olive mill wastewater

Imane Haydari et al.

Summary: A novel reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was synthesized using Verbena officinalis as a green reducing agent. RGO was encapsulated in sodium alginate (SA) to form SA-RGO beads, which were used for treating olive mill wastewater (OMWW) rich in phenolic compounds. The SA-RGO beads exhibited excellent adsorption performance.

Insight into microwave-assisted synthesis of the chitosan-MOF composite: Pb(II) adsorption

Humaira Gul Zaman et al.

Summary: Heavy metal contamination has become a global issue, necessitating the removal of metals from water bodies. This study introduces a composite material (chitosan-UiO-66-glycidyl methacrylate MOF) with excellent adsorption properties for Pb(II) ions. The Langmuir model fits well with the adsorption data, and the composite demonstrates high thermal stability and recyclability, making it a sustainable adsorbent for metal recovery.

Evaluation of a ZnCl2-modified biochar derived from activated sludge biomass for adsorption of sulfamethoxazole

Shahab Minaei et al.

Summary: Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was effectively removed from aqueous solution through adsorption to a chemically modified biochar created using microwave pyrolysis of activated municipal wastewater sludge. Optimization of synthesis parameters led to the creation of ZnCl2 modified biochar (ZnBC) with improved surface functional groups and porous structure. The optimized ZnBC demonstrated high SMX removal efficiency and adsorption capacity. The application of modified activated sludge-based biochar provides a sustainable method for treating pharmaceuticals and recycling waste sludges.

Ecotoxicological characteristics and properties of zinc-modified biochar produced by different methods

Marta Marcinczyk et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the ecotoxicological effects of different methods of zinc-modified biochar (BC-Zn). Invertebrates (Folsomia candida, Daphnia magna) and bacteria (Aliivibrio fischeri) were used to assess the toxicity of different BC-Zn treatments. The post-treated and calcined composites had higher levels of total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (C-tot PAHs) compared to the pre-modified BC-Zn, but they had limited impact on the luminescence activity of bacteria.

A novel hydrogel beads based copper-doped Cerastoderma edule shells@Alginate biocomposite for highly fungicide sorption from aqueous medium

Khalid Aziz et al.

Summary: A novel biocomposite Ce-Cu@Alg based on Cerastoderma edule shells doped with copper and alginate was used as a biosorbent for the removal of thiabendazole (TBZ) pesticide from water. The Langmuir model was found to be the most suitable for describing the adsorption process, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 21.98 mg/g. The optimal conditions for TBZ removal were determined to be 100 ppm initial concentration, a Ce-Cu@Alg beads dose of 6 g/L, and a contact time of 180 min, resulting in a maximum removal rate of 83.42%.

Khalid Aziz et al.

Summary: This paper investigated the removal of thiabendazole from aqueous media using modified Cellana tramoserica shells as adsorbents. Experimental results showed that the maximum adsorption amount for CT and CT-Cu was 319.68 mg/g and 376.12 mg/g, respectively. Summary: This study proposes a method of recovering phenolic compounds from olive mill wastewater (OMWW) through electrosorption, which have antimicrobial activities in water. By preparing a bio-sourced alginate-activated carbon fixed-bed electrode, high-efficiency electrosorption of phenolic compounds is achieved while decontaminating the wastewater. The results show that the optimal electrode potential and activated carbon content lead to the best electrosorption performance.
