The Origin of Mo2C Films for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Analysis: Electromagnetic or Chemical Enhancement?

Chang Ji et al.

Summary: This study investigates the origin of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) using a two-dimensional (2D) semimetal material, molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) film, and demonstrates that its enhancement effect is of chemical origin. The study also proposes doping strategies to optimize the SERS sensitivity of Mo2C.

Emerging SERS biosensors for the analysis of cells and extracellular vesicles

Mohammad Tavakkoli Yaraki et al.

Summary: This review discusses the application of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in the study of cells and extracellular vesicles (EVs). By utilizing the electromagnetic and chemical mechanisms, SERS can overcome the limitations in current research and become a non-invasive ultrasensitive tool. The review summarizes the recent advances in designing SERS biosensors using nanomaterials and label-aided or label-free approaches, and explores the potential of SERS in future biomedical applications.

Nanoarchitectonics horizons: materials for life sciences

V Karthick et al.

Summary: Nanoarchitectonics is about fabricating materials at the atomic/molecular level to achieve desired shape and function. Understanding the characteristics and spatial assemblies contributing to material performance is crucial. Successful biomaterials can overcome challenges and maintain integrity and effective functioning. Shape and efficacy control of target materials can be achieved through self-assembly, supramolecular chemistry, and atomic/molecular manipulation. The physicochemical properties of materials and biomolecule recognition sites determine structural rigidity in hierarchical structures. Materials like polymers, metal nanoparticles, nucleic acid systems, metal-organic frameworks, and carbon-based nanostructures hold promise for developing biocompatible systems.

Electrostatic self-assembly of 2D Janus PS@Au nanoraspberry photonic-crystal array with enhanced near-infrared SERS activity

An Cao et al.

Summary: A simple electrostatic self-assembly strategy was utilized to fabricate a 2D Janus PS@Au nanoraspberry photonic-crystal array with strong near-infrared (NIR) SERS performance. The opposite charges allowed small positively-charged Au nanoparticles to effectively self-assemble on larger negatively-charged PS latex photonic crystal, allowing for highly controllable deposition of Au nanoparticles. The Janus PS@Au nanoraspberry arrays exhibited strong NIR-SERS activity with high enhancement factor and ultra-low molecular detection limit.

Porous Pt-Ni Nanobelt Arrays with Superior Performance in H2/Air Atmosphere for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Dewei Yao et al.

Summary: Constructing membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) with porous Pt-Ni nanobelt arrays can significantly enhance fuel cell performance by providing convenient mass transport pathways, where the strained catalyst improves catalytic activity. The superior performance of these MEAs is attributed to the high activity of the porous Pt-Ni nanobelt structure.
