The multifaceted role of ferroptosis in liver disease

Junyi Chen et al.

Summary: Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent form of non-apoptotic cell death characterized by excessive lipid peroxidation and is associated with liver diseases. Dysregulated metabolic pathways and impaired iron homeostasis play a role in the progression of liver disease via ferroptosis. Several ferroptosis-associated genes and pathways have been implicated in liver disease. Targeting ferroptosis may have therapeutic potential for managing liver diseases.

An Update on Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and Cardiovascular Health

Andrew Elagizi et al.

Summary: Interest in the potential cardiovascular benefits of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3) began in the 1940s, but there has been controversy due to conflicting results among studies and meta-analyses. Recent large, randomized trials showed discordant findings, with one using a higher dose of omega-3 showing a significant reduction in cardiovascular events. The conflicting results in clinical trials may be due to inadequate dosing of omega-3 and aggressive treatment with other effective therapies.

Plasma Hsp90 levels in patients with systemic sclerosis and relation to lung and skin involvement: a cross-sectional and longitudinal study

Hana Storkanova et al.

Summary: According to the study, plasma levels of Hsp90 are increased in patients with systemic sclerosis compared to healthy controls, and are associated with increased inflammatory activity, worsened lung function, and extent of skin involvement in patients with diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis. In patients with systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease treated with cyclophosphamide, baseline Hsp90 levels can predict changes in DLCO over 12 months of therapy.

Characterization of Metabolites in a Zebrafish Model of Alzheimer's Disease Supplemented with Mussel-Derived Plasmalogens by Ultraperformance Liquid Chromatography Q-Exactive Orbitrap Mass Spectrometry-Based Unbiased Metabolomics

Mengna Zhang et al.

Summary: Plasmalogens have been found to have a cognitive improvement effect on Alzheimer's disease (AD), and certain metabolites such as glycerophosphocholine and choline could potentially serve as endogenous markers. This study utilized metabolomics to reveal the metabolic networks of AD and shed light on the protective effect of Pls through biochemistry mechanisms and metabolic pathways.

Momordica charantia leaf extract reduces hepatic lipid accumulation and diet-induced dyslipidemia in zebrafish through lipogenesis and beta-oxidation

Semon Wu et al.

Summary: The study revealed the regulatory role of wild bitter melon in lipid metabolism, showing that the extract can reduce hypertrophy in adipocytes and diminish lipid accumulation in zebrafish livers. Furthermore, the findings demonstrated a decrease in lipogenic markers in zebrafish when given bitter melon extract after a high-fat diet, suggesting potential pharmaceutical applications for dyslipidemia.

The Changes in Endogenous Metabolites in Hyperlipidemic Rats Treated with Herbal Mixture Containing Lemon, Apple Cider, Garlic, Ginger, and Honey

Azliana Abu Bakar Sajak et al.

Summary: The herbal mixture containing lemon, apple cider, garlic, ginger, and honey was found to have hypolipidemic effects on hyperlipidemic rats, lowering total cholesterol and LDL-C levels, and inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase activity. Pathway analysis revealed that the mixture altered 17 pathways, with the TCA cycle having the highest impact. The study demonstrated the potential of the mixture as an anti-hyperlipidemic agent by modulating metabolism and biochemical pathways.

Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease and lipoprotein metabolism

Joerg Heeren et al.

Summary: MAFLD is characterized by pathological accumulation of triglycerides in hepatocytes and is closely related to disturbances in systemic energy metabolism. Liver plays a central role in lipid metabolism, with excessive hepatic triglyceride synthesis being a key factor in the development of MAFLD. Interventions targeting lipid storage and energy combustion in adipose tissues may help ameliorate MAFLD.

Flavonoids from Whole-Grain Oat Alleviated High-Fat Diet-Induced Hyperlipidemia via Regulating Bile Acid Metabolism and Gut Microbiota in Mice

Ruiqian Duan et al.

Summary: Whole-grain oat flavonoids can improve hyperlipidemia induced by high-fat diet by regulating lipid metabolism, promoting bile acid synthesis, and enhancing the efflux of fat through the FXR pathway. Additionally, they can significantly alter the composition of gut microbiota, reducing harmful bacteria and increasing beneficial bacteria.
