Multistimuli-Responsive Dynamic Effects in a One-Dimensional Coordination Polymer

Bibhuti Bhusan Rath et al.

Summary: The rational combination of suitable functionalities in single crystalline materials has led to the development of multistimuli-receptive actuators. The one-dimensional coordination polymer fabricated in this study displays all dynamic effects of photo-, thermo-, and mechano-responsiveness, paving the way for designing multisalient actuating materials.

Engineering Photomechanical Molecular Crystals to Achieve Extraordinary Expansion Based on Solid-State [2+2] Photocycloaddition

Tian-Yi Xu et al.

Summary: A new molecular crystal, (E)-NAAM, was synthesized in this study, capable of undergoing a solid-state photocycloaddition reaction under visible light illumination, forming sealed cavities within the crystals. These microcrystals exhibited photomechanical motions such as bending and elongation under light exposure, as well as the capability to release aqueous dye solutions. The results demonstrated unique crystal elongation kinetics and significant molecular rearrangements during illumination.

Atomic-resolved hierarchical structure of elastic ?-conjugated molecular crystal for flexible organic photonics

Chuanxin Wei et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the atomic-resolved structural perturbations of an elastic conjugated molecular crystal, achieving flexible naked-eye-visible and color-tunable afterglow wave guides. The outstanding elastic property of the crystal is derived from the synergistic effect of interlayer hierarchical slippage and intralayer molecule perturbations, allowing for the absorption and release of mechanical energy to avoid brittle fracture. The observations provide insights into the photophysical behavior of conjugated materials and the potential application of elastic crystals in flexible organic photonics.

Mechanical Bending and Modulation of Photoactuation Properties in a One-Dimensional Pb(II) Coordination Polymer

Bibhuti Bhusan Rath et al.

Summary: As research on stimuli-responsive materials progresses, dynamic crystals are leading the investigation, while studies on the mechanical properties of coordination polymers (CPs) are still in their infancy. The report of one-dimensional CP with unique properties provides a new avenue for designing CPs with multi-stimuli-responsive actuating properties.

Multiple stimuli-responsive flexible crystal with 2D elastic bending, plastic twisting and photoinduced bending capabilities

Kui Chen et al.

Summary: This study reports an anthracene derivative crystal, 9-anthraldehyde, that responds to mechanical force and light, exhibiting properties such as two-dimensional elastic bending, plastic twisting, and photoinduced bending. The unique properties of the crystal can be attributed to the intermolecular interactions and molecular arrangement types, providing a new perspective on creating stimuli-responsive mono-component crystals with multiple properties.
