Effects of areca nut consumption on cell differentiation of osteoblasts, myoblasts, and fibroblasts

Areca Nut and Oral Cancer: Evidence from Studies Conducted in Humans

Summary: Areca nut chewing is a major risk factor for oral cancer, especially in South Asian and East Asian populations. The risk of oral cancer increases with the daily amount of betel quid chewed and the duration of chewing. About half of oral cancers in India and Taiwan are attributed to betel quid chewing. Oral leukoplakia and oral submucous fibrosis are potential precursors of oral cancer caused by areca nut chewing. Quitting areca nut chewing may reduce the risk of oral cancer.

Overexpression of H19 in OSF tissues and fibrotic buccal mucosal fibroblasts (fBMFs) contributes to increased myofibroblast activities, while the interaction between H19 and miR-29b inhibits the antifibrotic effects. Additionally, arecoline stimulates H19 upregulation through the TGF-beta pathway in OSF, suggesting a potential mechanism for fibrogenesis.
