Hydroaminoalkylation for the Catalytic Addition of Amines to Alkenes or Alkynes: Diverse Mechanisms Enable Diverse Substrate Scope

Rebecca C. DiPucchio et al.

Summary: Hydroaminoalkylation is an efficient catalytic reaction for the reaction of amines with alkenes and alkynes. This reaction has potential applications in the pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and fine chemical industries, as well as in materials science. Different catalysts mediate hydroaminoalkylation through distinct mechanisms. Despite some barriers, further developments and applications of this reaction can be achieved by improving catalyst stability and reaction conditions.

Titanium-Catalyzed Intermolecular Hydroaminoalkylation of Alkenes with Tertiary Amines

Dennis Geik et al.

Summary: A novel cationic titanium catalyst system was developed for intermolecular hydroaminoalkylation of alkenes with tertiary alkylamines, resulting in excellent regioselectivity towards branched products. Interestingly, alpha-C-H bond activation was observed not only at N-methyl but also at N-methylene groups for selected amines.

Commodity Polymers to Functional Aminated Materials: Single-Step and Atom-Economic Synthesis by Hydroaminoalkylation

Sabrina S. Scott et al.

Summary: Hydroaminoalkylation is a promising method for catalytically preparing amine-functionalized polymers, allowing for a single-step reaction at large scale without the need for protection/deprotection protocols typically required for secondary amine synthesis. This method is atom economic and demonstrates the utility of reactive and unprotected amine terminus for further modifications.

Metal-Catalyzed Postpolymerization Strategies for Polar Group Incorporation into Polyolefins Containing C-C, C=C, and Aromatic Rings

Gabriel Menendez Rodriguez et al.

Summary: This contribution provides the current state of the art of metal-catalyzed modification of polyolefins and subsequent polar group incorporation. The direct synthesis from polar monomers is often precluded by catalyst poisoning or uncontrolled side reactions, so modifying a previously prepared polymer through a postpolymerization route is a common alternative. Polyolefins, especially the saturated ones, are challenging substrates to work with due to the limited potential reaction sites within the polymer.

Direct, Catalytic α-Alkylation of N-Heterocycles by Hydroaminoalkylation: Substrate Effects for Regiodivergent Product Formation

Rebecca C. DiPucchio et al.

Summary: This study presents a method for the direct alkylation of unprotected amine heterocycles using an early transition-metal system, allowing for short reaction times and selective formation of branched reaction products in most cases. By avoiding the use of high loadings of precious metal catalysts, this method offers a more efficient approach to alkylate saturated N-heterocycles.
