Rapid activation of a full-length proton exchange membrane fuel cell stack with a novel intermittent oxygen starvation method

Daijun Yang et al.

Summary: Intermittent oxygen starvation (IOS), a new in situ activation approach, shows faster activation speed and lower hydrogen consumption compared to load cycling activation (LCA) in newly manufactured proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stacks. After IOS activation, catalyst particles are more exposed to the catalyst surface and evenly dispersed within ionomers, which helps the formation of catalyst-ionomer-reactant three phase region (TPR).

Overview: State-of-the Art Commercial Membranes for Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis

Dirk Henkensmeier et al.

Summary: Water electrolysis is considered a promising method for storing and distributing large amounts of renewable energy, but current technologies face challenges such as high costs and scarce catalysts. Anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysis is seen as a potential solution, with advantages including low cost, high operational capacity, and fast response times.

Online measurements of fluoride ions in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis through ion chromatography

Paolo Marocco et al.

Summary: This study investigated online monitoring of fluoride ion concentration in PEMWE effluent water using IC setup and found the impact of current density and temperature on fluoride concentrations, as well as the influence of CCM thickness on fluoride release rates. Additionally, the study revealed a linear correlation between fluoride concentrations and water conductivity.

Transformation of the OER-Active IrOx Species under Transient Operation Conditions in PEM Water Electrolysis

Philipp Jan Rheinlaender et al.

Summary: Iridium oxides are commonly used oxygen evolution catalysts in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis. The conversion of IrO2 to a more hydrous form during operation transients can improve the activity of the catalyst. This transformation has implications for the long-term performance and durability of PEMWE devices.

Oxygen Evolution Reaction Activity and Stability Benchmarks for Supported and Unsupported IrOx Electrocatalysts

Camila Daiane Ferreira da Silva et al.

Summary: Supported IrOx nanocatalysts are more active but less stable for OER compared to unsupported micrometer-sized catalysts, while Ta-doped tin oxides used as supports for IrOx nanoparticles show higher stability. Thermal annealing significantly reduces Ir atom dissolution rate for both micro- and nano-IrOx particles, leading to improved stability.

Open-circuit dissolution of platinum from the cathode in polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolysers

J. Dodwell et al.

Summary: Platinum is the state-of-the-art catalyst for hydrogen evolution in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) water electrolysers, but its stability in situ has only been characterized to a limited extent. This study measured platinum dissolution from the cathode during intermittent operation of a 3-electrode PEM electrolyser cell, finding that platinum dissolution was most pronounced during open-circuit voltage periods when the cathode potential exceeded 0.85 V NHE.

Comparison of Pt-Doped Membranes for Gas Crossover Suppression in Polymer Electrolyte Water Electrolysis

Steffen Garbe et al.

Summary: The study found that only border-distributed Pt and uniformly-distributed Pt allow safe operation of PEWE cells within an ideal current density range by suppressing hydrogen gas crossover. Decreasing the Pt content in the membrane from 0.06 mg cm(-2) to 0.01 mg cm(-2) does not effectively suppress gas crossover.

Summary: This article explores the durability-limiting factors and mitigation strategies of AEMWEs under different operating modes, and connects the extended-term behaviors of AEMWEs at the single-cell level with the instability of single-cell components in terms of electrochemical, chemical, and mechanical aspects. The pros and cons of AEMWEs under these operation modes are discussed, along with providing directions for achieving long-lasting AEMWEs with highly efficient hydrogen production capabilities.
