Minimum fluidization velocity and reduction behavior of combusted iron powder in a fluidized bed

C. J. M. Hessels et al.

Summary: In this study, the fluidization and reduction behavior of micron-sized iron oxide powder produced by iron combustion were investigated in a lab-scale cylindrical fluidized bed. The minimum fluidization velocity (umf) was found to stabilize above a normalized static bed height of 0.5 H/D. Experimental results deviated from the Ergun correlation at temperatures above 560 K, prompting the proposal of a new correlation that takes cohesive inter-particle solid bridge force into account. Reduction experiments revealed gradual defluidization at temperatures exceeding 800 K, with a maximum reduction degree of 61% achieved at 807 K and 100 vol% H2.

A quantitative analysis of the ignition characteristics of fine iron particles

XiaoCheng Mi et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively examines the ignition characteristics of fine iron particles, finding that the ignition temperature depends on the ratio between the initial oxide layer thickness and particle size. The ignition delay time follows a d(2)-law scaling with particle size. The findings contribute to the understanding of iron particle ignition behavior.

Reduction kinetics of combusted iron powder using hydrogen

C. J. M. Hessels et al.

Summary: Hydrogen reduction of iron oxide fines produced by iron combustion was investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that the morphology of the reduction products depended on temperature but not on the hydrogen partial pressure, with higher temperatures leading to larger pore sizes. Based on analysis, the reduction process could be described by a single-step phase boundary controlled reaction at temperatures below 600℃, and a multi-step mechanism was required for reactions at higher temperatures.

Phase transformations and microstructure evolution during combustion of iron powder

Laurine Choisez et al.

Summary: For the successful transition to sustainable carbon-free energy carriers, a safe and high-density energy storage technology is needed. This study investigates the combustion of iron powders and its morphological and microstructural evolution. Iron powder combustion resulted in spherical hollow particles with a complex microstructure, and partial evaporation was observed. The cracking at the end of the combustion process led to mostly open porosity, which is favorable for subsequent reduction.

Some fundamental aspects of laminar flames in nonvolatile solid fuel suspensions

Samuel Goroshin et al.

Summary: This paper critically reviews the theoretical and experimental literature regarding the fundamental aspects of flames in nonvolatile solid fuel suspensions. It summarizes the key experimental evidence of laminar flame structure and flame speed from a variety of experimental apparatus, and interprets these results in terms of relatively simple theoretical models. The paper emphasizes the importance of diffusion-limited reactions in the ignition and combustion of particles in nonvolatile suspensions.

Micro-Explosion mechanism of iron hybrid Methane-Air premixed flames

Yueh-Heng Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the micro-explosion mechanisms of iron particles in methane-air premixed flames. The experiment shows that the micro-explosion probability of iron particles increases with the particle size and CO plays a critical role in promoting the micro-explosion probability of particles smaller than 50μm. The mechanism of micro-explosion involves oxidizer diffusion, iron oxide production, and the redox reaction of Fe3O4 with CO.

Low-carbon production of iron and steel: Technology options, economic assessment, and policy

Zhiyuan Fan et al.

Summary: With the urgency to transition to a net-zero CO2 economy, governments and industries are focusing on decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors like steel making. Current decarbonization technologies have limitations, and achieving deep decarbonization in the iron and steel industry will require a combination of factors including cost and technical maturity.

Burn time and combustion regime of laser-ignited single iron particle

D. Ning et al.

Summary: An improved particle generator based on electrodynamic powder fluidization was proposed and constructed for investigating the combustion of a single metal particle. Experimental results showed that the combustion process of particles is influenced by oxygen concentration, and the overall combustion process of iron particles is controlled by external and internal diffusion of oxygen.

Stereoscopic high-speed imaging of iron microexplosions and nanoparticle-release

Shen Li et al.

Summary: The combustion behavior of iron particles in a laminar diffusion flame was studied, revealing the importance of microexplosive processes. It was observed that microexplosions can impact combustion stability, product formation and result in the generation of planar structures. The release phenomenon during iron particle combustion was characterized by multiple cracked particle shells and hollow structures, with FeO identified as an intermediate species.
