Rapid and ultrasensitive solution-based SERS detection of drug additives in aquaculture by using polystyrene sulfonate modified gold nanobipyramids

Muhammad Usman Amin et al.

Summary: In recent years, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has been widely used for rapid detection of trace-level molecular targets. In this study, a simple and effective solution-based SERS protocol was developed to improve the detection of cationic dye molecules in aquaculture. The results showed that the ionic strength of the solution has an important impact on the colloidal stability and SERS activity, and the proposed method demonstrated sensitivity at low concentrations of aggregating agents.

Molecular mechanisms of amyloid formation in living systems

Tessa Sinnige

Summary: Fibrillar protein aggregation is associated with various human diseases, and the mechanisms of amyloid formation have been extensively studied in vitro. However, the extent to which these mechanisms apply to human disease is still unclear. Results from animal models suggest that aggregation mechanisms in vivo can be explained using similar biophysical principles established in vitro, but this may be influenced by high levels of overexpression.

A Comparative Study of High-Contrast Fluorescence Lifetime Probes for Imaging Amyloid in Tissue

Felix Gorka et al.

Summary: This study compares the use of a novel fluorescent probe, PAP_1, with the traditional Thioflavin T as a fluorescence lifetime imaging probe for imaging alpha-synuclein aggregates in brain tissue. Despite lower brightness, PAP_1 has a much stronger affinity for alpha-synuclein aggregates, leading to a significant decrease in fluorescence lifetime and improved contrast between background tissue and aggregates.

Summary: DNA origami's reliable programmability makes it an attractive tool for self-assembly of complex nanostructures, especially in the field of biosensing with plasmonic nanoparticles. Plasmonic particles offer benefits for sensing, such as enhancing fluorescence and visualizing nanoscale dynamic actuation through chiral rearrangements. This Perspective discusses recent developments and future prospects of DNA origami-enabled plasmonic sensing systems, including fluorescence-based sensors, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy sensors, and chiral sensing.

Solution-Based SERS Detection of Weak Surficial Affinity Molecules Using Cysteamine-Modified Au Bipyramids

Muhammad Usman Amin et al.

Summary: The study successfully achieved surface modification of gold nano-bipyramids for ultra-sensitive detection of trace targets through a simple ligand exchange method. The cysteamine-capped gold nano-bipyramids showed higher sensitivity in SERS detection compared to CTAB-capped ones. The aggregation of Au BPs caused by hydrogen bonding with the pigment molecule led to local electromagnetic field enhancement, enhancing the detection limit of weak-affinity molecules.

Circular Dichroism of Gold Bipyramid Dimers

Radoslaw Deska et al.

Summary: Chiral nanomaterials, especially plasmonic bipyramids, have attracted attention for their ability to modulate optical properties and dissymmetry factors. By studying the orientations of gold bipyramids in dimers, researchers observed changes in chiroptical properties through modulation of extinction spectra and local field enhancement. Assessing the chirality of different arrangements revealed configurations with dissymmetry factors as high as -0.3.

Broadband SERS Enhancement by DNA Origami Assembled Bimetallic Nanoantennas with Label-Free Single Protein Sensing

Swati Tanwar et al.

Summary: Engineering hotspots in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) by precisely controlling the assembly of plasmonic nanostructures can enhance the potential of SERS for single molecule detection. Plasmonic dimer nanoantennas with tunable gaps showed significant enhancements for single dye molecules, and were able to detect a single thrombin protein molecule in a 10 nm wide nanogap. These engineered nanoantennas have the potential to serve as a broadband SERS enhancer for specific detection of biological molecules with single-molecule sensitivity.

Site-Selective Deposition of Metal-Organic Frameworks on Gold Nanobipyramids for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering

Xueqing Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a facile wet-chemistry approach was used for the selective deposition of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) on anisotropic Au nanobipyramids (NBPs) and nanorods. ZIF-8 was selectively deposited at the ends and waist and around the entire surface of the elongated Au nanocrystals. The NBP-based nanostructures with end-deposited ZIF-8 exhibited the best surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance, showing potential for molecular sensing, optical switching, and plasmonic catalysis.

Enhanced RI Sensitivity and SERS Performances of Individual Au Nanobipyramid Dimers

TianYi Fu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the plasmon refractive index (RI) sensitivity and SERS performance of individual Au nanobipyramid (NBP) dimers, finding that they follow the universal plasmon ruler at specific scaled gap sizes. The maximum RI sensitivity and SERS enhancement factor of Au NBP dimers were demonstrated to be excellent. Comparisons were made with Au nanorod and nanoellipsoid counterparts, showing enhanced RI sensitivity and SERS performance of the Au NBP dimers. This study provides valuable insights for designing future Au dimer-based SERS substrates and LSPR RI sensors for chemical/biological sensing and detection.
