How retrieval practice and semantic generation affect subsequently studied material: an analysis of item-level effects

Oliver Kliegl et al.

Summary: The forward testing effect (FTE) is the finding that practicing retrieval of previously studied material can enhance recall of newly studied material. This study found that both retrieval practice and semantic generation induce the general FTE, but only retrieval practice leads to a differential FTE. Regardless of the study material, retrieval practice produces a more pronounced FTE.

Testing Potential Mechanisms Underlying Test-Potentiated New Learning

Chunliang Yang et al.

Summary: Studies show that practicing retrieval of studied information can facilitate subsequent learning and retrieval of new information, known as the forward testing effect. The release-from-PI theory, strategy-change view, and reset-of-encoding account have been proposed as explanations for this phenomenon. Results indicate that prior list intrusions significantly mediate the FTE, supporting the release-from-PI theory, while temporal clustering plays a significant mediating role in the FTE, supporting the strategy-change view.

When retrieval practice promotes new learning-The critical role of study material

Oliver Kliegl et al.

Summary: The research findings suggest that the forward testing effect (FTE) can arise with both unrelated and categorized item lists, but parallel FTEs for the two types of lists only occur with short retention interval and short lag between study sessions. Prolonged retention or lag results in FTE observed with categorized lists but disappeared with unrelated lists. The study highlights the critical role of study material in influencing the FTE, with strategy change driving FTE with categorized material and context change driving FTE with unrelated material.
