How Reproducible are Surface Areas Calculated from the BET Equation?

Johannes W. M. Osterrieth et al.

Summary: Porosity and surface area analysis are important in modern materials science. However, there is a lack of attention to the reproducibility issue in calculating BET surface areas from identical isotherms, raising concerns over the reliability of reported BET areas. To address this, a new computational approach called BET surface identification (BETSI) has been developed for accurately and systematically determining the BET area of nanoporous materials.

Reactive Chlorine Capture by Dichlorination of Alkene Linkers Metal-Organic Frameworks

Tyler J. Azbell et al.

Summary: This study reports the irreversible capture of chlorine gas through the dichlorination of alkene linkages in a Zirconium-based metal-organic framework. The framework retains its structure and porosity after the capture of chlorine gas at low pressures. This method provides a new pathway for reactive chlorine gas capture and has potential applications in industrial and personal protective equipment, reducing the risk of exposure to users.

Docking rings in a solid: reversible assembling of pseudorotaxanes inside a zirconium metal-organic framework

Summary: A zirconium metal-organic framework with a T-shaped benzimidazole strut was constructed and successfully used as a sponge-like material for selectively absorbing macrocyclic guests. The binding process was reversible and acid-base switchable. This study provides an alternative route for creating complex functional materials with interpenetrated structures.

Exploring the Role of Cluster Formation in UiO Family Hf Metal-Organic Frameworks with in Situ X-ray Pair Distribution Function Analysis

Francesca C. N. Firth et al.

Summary: The structures of Zr and Hf metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are sensitive to small changes in synthetic conditions, with the choice of solvent and reaction temperature determining the cluster identity and hence the MOF structure. The nature of Hf metal clusters in different reaction solutions can be tracked during UiO MOF synthesis, leading to insights on the formation mechanism and potential for designing new MOF structures.

25 Years of Reticular Chemistry

Ralph Freund et al.

Summary: The core of reticular chemistry has brought precision and expertise of organic and inorganic synthesis to the solid state. The most profound scientific innovation of this field has been the design strategies for the synthesis of extended crystalline solids through strong directional bonds, highlighting the different classes of reticular materials developed and how complexity can be introduced into their backbones. Structural control over these materials is being extended from the molecular scale to their crystal morphology and shape on the nanoscale, all the way to their shaping on the bulk scale.

Effects of ligand functionalization on the band gaps and luminescent properties of a Zr12 oxo-cluster based metal-organic framework

Lin Zhou et al.

Summary: Effective optical band gap engineering of a robust Zr-12 oxo-based hcp UiO-66 has been achieved through linker functionalization, leading to significant reduction of band gap energy by introducing methyl or amino functional groups. The photoluminescence properties of the materials were also greatly improved by using substituted ligands, resulting in obvious red shifted photoluminescence compared to the pristine hcp UiO-66.

Modulated synthesis of thiol-functionalized fcu and hcp UiO-66(Zr) for the removal of silver(i) ions from water

Bastian Moll et al.

Summary: The study presents the synthesis and characterization of two modified thiol-containing UiO-66 metal-organic frameworks capable of removing Ag(i) ions from aqueous solution. The use of mercaptoacetic acid as a modifier allows for the introduction of thiol groups into the UiO-66 framework while retaining its properties like porosity and stability. The materials exhibit high uptake capacities for Ag(i) and follow Langmuir-type behavior in adsorption kinetics.
