Up-conversion emission in transition metal and lanthanide co-doped systems: dimer sensitization revisited

Daniel Avram et al.

Summary: Lanthanide (Ln) co-doped transition metal (TM) upconversion (UC) co-doped systems have promising applications in photonics, bioimaging, and luminescence thermometry. The presence of TM, such as Mo6+ /W6+, Mn2+, or Fe3+, significantly affects Ln UC emission, including intensity enhancement, color modulation, and alteration of photon order. By employing a pulsed, excitation variable laser and analyzing multiple grains with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we revisit the current mechanism of the UC process and address the dynamical approach and intrinsic chemical complexity of co-doped TM, Ln systems.

Tailoring of upconversion luminescence of Al3+ engineered titanate phosphor for non-invasive thermometry

Sasank Pattnaik et al.

Summary: The ability of rare-earth-doped ferroelectric oxides to achieve outstanding upconversion performances under NIR irradiation despite possessing intrinsic electric properties drives researchers worldwide. In this study, the structural and spectroscopic characteristics of Bi4Ti3O12 phosphor integrated with Er3+, Yb3+, and Al3+ were thoroughly investigated. The addition of Al3+ ions was found to cause a considerable increase in UC emission, and the relation between UC emission and pump power variation was determined using the rate law equation. Additionally, the prepared phosphor exhibited high sensitivity and excellent thermal stability even with the addition of Al3+ ions.

Simultaneous effects of synthesis temperature and dopants on MgWO4 UC phosphors

Manisha Prasad et al.

Summary: A series of coactivated divalent-metal tungstate Er3+/Yb3+/Mn4+: MgWO4 phosphors were successfully developed to investigate the effect of synthesis temperature on crystal structure, fluorescence, temperature sensing, and the involved dynamics. The synthesis temperature significantly influenced the upconversion intensity, and the incorporation of Mn4+ shifted the upconversion spectra and improved the sensing abilities. The prepared nanophosphors exhibited high sensitivities and accuracy for temperature measurement.

Thermally stable upconverting Na3Zr2(SiO4)2PO4: Er3+/Yb3+phosphors for displays and optical thermometry

Manisha Prasad et al.

Summary: This article presents the analysis of advanced Er3+/Yb3+: Na3Zr2(SiO4)(2)PO4 (NASICON) monoclinic phosphors prepared by solid state reaction technique as upconverting materials. The structural parameters, surface morphology, and optical characteristics of the synthesized phosphors are analyzed. The codoping of Yb3+ ions in the Er3+ doped phosphors exhibit fascinating results under 980 nm continuous wave diode laser excitation, which can be used for thermometry based on fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR).

Unravelling the benefits of transition-metal-co-doping in lanthanide upconversion nanoparticles

Sonali Mohanty et al.

Summary: Recent advances in upconversion luminescent materials have highlighted their importance in both scientific research and future applications. However, the low upconversion luminescence intensity and limited tuneability hinder their versatile applications. This tutorial review focuses on the implementation of transition metal ion co-dopants to enhance upconversion efficiency in lanthanide nanomaterials. The review summarizes recent studies on the tailored design of UC materials with transition metal ion co-dopants and discusses the desirable functionality of transition metal ions in the host matrixes. In addition to improving upconversion efficiency, the incorporation of transition metal co-dopants has sparked interest in applications such as in vivo imaging, drug delivery, and nanothermometers.

Frequency upconversion based thermally stable molybdate phosphors in a temperature sensing probe

Sasank Pattnaik et al.

Summary: Er3+-Yb3+ co-doped NaGd(MoO4)(2) phosphors with different concentrations of Er3+ and Yb3+ ions were successfully synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state reaction method. The prepared phosphor showed intense green upconversion emission even at low pump power and demonstrated good thermometric properties using the Stark sublevels of Er3+ ions. The phosphor can act as a temperature probe with reliable sensing ability and excellent thermal stability.
