Global Emissions of Hydrogen Chloride and Particulate Chloride from Continental Sources

Bingqing Zhang et al.

Summary: Gaseous and particulate chlorine species play a crucial role in various aspects of the atmosphere, including oxidation capacity, aerosol water uptake, visibility degradation, and human health. A comprehensive global emission inventory reveals that HCl emissions are mainly from industries such as open waste burning and biomass combustion, while pCl emissions are mainly from biofuel and open biomass burning processes. The sectoral and spatial distributions of these emissions are heterogeneous, and the temporal trends are influenced by various factors.

Hydrogen Chloride (HCl) at Ground Sites During CalNex 2010 and Insight Into Its Thermodynamic Properties

Ye Tao et al.

Summary: Gas phase hydrogen chloride (HCl) levels were measured in Pasadena and San Joaquin Valley (SJV) in California. The study found a coupled phase partitioning behavior between HCl/Cl- and HNO3/NO3-, and suggested that sources other than sea salt are important for chloride concentrations. The study also showed that despite low relative humidity, aqueous phase reactions played a significant role in the displacement of HCl/Cl- by HNO3/NO3-.

Gas-Phase Chlorine Radical Oxidation of Alkanes: Effects of Structural Branching, NOx, and Relative Humidity Observed during Environmental Chamber Experiments

Leif G. Jahn et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of alkane molecular structure on chlorine-initiated oxidation and SOA formation through laboratory experiments, revealing key differences in the oxidation process of branched alkanes compared to OH-initiated reactions. Low-NOx conditions result in higher SOA production, with branched alkanes producing less SOA and branched cycloalkanes producing more SOA.

Understanding Sources of Atmospheric Hydrogen Chloride in Coastal Spring and Continental Winter

Andrea A. Angelucci et al.

Summary: Measurements of ambient 0.5 Hz hydrogen chloride (HCl) in Canadian cities revealed that coastal HCl levels were largely influenced by sea-salt aerosol acid displacement and chlorine activation, while direct sources of HCl in continental cities remained unknown. The discrepancy between measured and modeled HCl concentrations in continental urban areas highlights the importance of further research on direct sources of HCl and the impact of road salt.

Global tropospheric halogen (Cl, Br, I) chemistry and its impact on oxidants

Xuan Wang et al.

Summary: An updated mechanism for tropospheric halogen chemistry in the GEOS-Chem model improves the efficiency of recycling and mobilization of bromine radicals, resulting in a lower global mean tropospheric BrO mixing ratio of 0.19 ppt. Model simulations show that Cl atoms contribute 0.8% of the global oxidation of methane. The study highlights the importance of halogen chemistry in influencing tropospheric oxidants and ozone concentrations.

Validation of a new cavity ring-down spectrometer for measuring tropospheric gaseous hydrogen chloride

Teles C. Furlani et al.

Summary: This study configured a commercial HCl cavity ring-down spectrometer for fast, sensitive, and accurate measurements of hydrogen chloride in the ambient atmosphere, showing high performance in detecting atmospherically relevant mixing ratios with short response time and high accuracy. Intercomparison with the EPA compendium method demonstrated good agreement and superior performance of the CRDS technology in sensitivity, selectivity, and response time compared to previous methods for HCl detection.
