Interactive effects of straw management, tillage, and a cover crop on nitrous oxide emissions and nitrate leaching from a sandy loam soil

Arezoo Taghizadeh-Toosi et al.

Summary: Minimum tillage, straw retention, and the use of cover crops are important for conservation agriculture. This study found that direct seeding with straw retention and the presence of a cover crop can significantly reduce nitrous oxide emissions and improve nitrogen retention and greenhouse gas balance in agroecosystems.

Nitrate and Dissolved Organic Carbon Release in Sandy Soils at Different Liquid/Solid Ratios Amended with Graphene and Classical Soil Improvers

Luigi Alessandrino et al.

Summary: This study highlights the importance of using parallel batch tests with different liquid/solid ratios to assess the dissolution mechanisms of graphene in soils. The results showed that graphene did not alter the physicochemical parameters of soils and did not trigger an increase in nitrate concentration. Compared to other soil improvers, graphene performed well in terms of its effects on soils.

Soil Available Nitrogen and Yield Effect under Different Combinations of Urease/Nitrate Inhibitor in Wheat/Maize Rotation System

Xiumin Cui et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different urease/nitrification inhibitor combinations on soil N level and grain yield in a wheat/maize rotation system. The results showed that the treatments supplied with urease/nitrification inhibitors reduced the conversion rate of NH4+ into NO3- and maintained higher NH4+ content in surface soils. The combinations of 1.5% HQ + 4% DCD and 1.5% HQ + 0.25% Nitrapyrin were found to be the optimal N stabilizing agents.

Optimal Fertilizer Application Reduced Nitrogen Leaching and Maintained High Yield in Wheat-Maize Cropping System in North China

Xiaosheng Luo et al.

Summary: Agricultural nitrogen non-point source pollution in the North China Plain has a significant impact on water quality and human health. This study focused on quantifying the characteristics of nitrogen leaching under different nitrogen application conditions in winter wheat and summer maize rotation farmland. The findings provide a basis for reducing the risk of nitrogen leaching and evaluating its impact in the area. The results suggest that the combination of chemical and organic fertilizers can effectively reduce nitrogen leaching in dry years, and the recommended optimized nitrogen application is 285-465 kg N ha(-1).

Improving Selected Chemical Properties of a Paddy Soil in Sabah Amended with Calcium Silicate: A Laboratory Incubation Study

Ivy Quirinus Chong et al.

Summary: In Malaysia, infertile soils and poor management practices are the main factors limiting rice yield and productivity. An incubation study showed that applying calcium silicate significantly improved soil pH, reduced exchangeable Al, increased available P, and enhanced cation exchange capacity. The recommended application rate was found to be 3 t ha(-1).

Spatial Relationship between Irrigation Water Salinity, Waterlogging, and Cropland Degradation in the Arid and Semi-Arid Environments

Reda Amer

Summary: This study investigated the spatial relationship between low-quality irrigation water and waterlogging in arid and semiarid environments in the western Nile Delta, Egypt, using multi-decadal Landsat images and hydrochemical water analysis. The results demonstrated a significant spatial relationship between waterlogging and soil salinity, resulting from long-term irrigation with high salinity groundwater, which led to soil salinity increase, low permeability, and waterlogging. The study offered a time- and cost-efficient geospatial method for regional monitoring of waterlogging and provided mitigation strategies for cropland degradation and agricultural drainage water recycling.

Biochars and Engineered Biochars for Water and Soil Remediation: A Review

Tariqul Islam et al.

Summary: Biochars are ecofriendly and multifunctional materials for remediation of water and soils, with engineered biochars showing better performance due to enlarged surface areas and surface functional groups. The main mechanisms for pollutant removal involve adsorption of inorganic pollutants and uptake of organic pollutants, driving forces including ion exchange, precipitation, hydrogen bonding, and van der Waals forces. Further pilot and field scale investigations are required to assess the practical applicability of biochars and engineered biochars in environmental remediation.
