Fluorinated graphene as a dual-functional anode to achieve dendrite-free and high-performance lithium metal batteries

Anif Jamaluddin et al.

Summary: This study proposes a dual-functional coating layer for lithium metal batteries (LMBs), which improves the lithium deposition and the efficiency of the solid-electrolyte interphase (ASEI) by predepositing a fluorinated electrochemically exfoliated graphene (F-ECG) as a modifier on a working electrode. The half-cell exhibits good stability and high coulombic efficiency after 100 cycles. Additionally, the full-cell LMB also demonstrates excellent capacity retention.

High-voltage lithium-metal battery with three-dimensional mesoporous carbon anode host and ether/carbonate binary electrolyte

Egy Adhitama et al.

Summary: Electrolyte recipes and Li metal anode host materials have been developed for lithium-metal batteries, showing improved Coulombic efficiency and cyclability. Various carbon materials, including one-dimensional carbon nanotubes, two-dimensional graphene nanosheets, and three-dimensional ordered mesoporous carbon CMK-8, have been utilized as host materials for Li metal, with CMK-8 showing promising results as a scaffold. With the proposed electrolyte, CMK-8 electrode enables uniform Li plating/stripping with a high Coulombic efficiency and a long cycle life, confirming the high structural stability of CMK-8 through electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy.

Regulating Lithium Electrodeposition with Laser-Structured Current Collectors for Stable Lithium Metal Batteries

Wei Dong et al.

Summary: A facile laser processing technique was developed to fabricate laser-structured copper foils (LSCFs) that can regulate lithium deposition kinetics and increase cycle life of LMBs. The laser processing technique relieves internal stress of lithium and prohibits the piecing of SEI, leading to a high Coulombic efficiency and stable performance. This work provides a fast and effective laser-based approach to construct highly stable lithium metal anodes.

Identification of LiH and nanocrystalline LiF in the solid-electrolyte interphase of lithium metal anodes

Zulipiya Shadike et al.

Summary: A comprehensive understanding of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) composition is crucial for developing high-energy batteries based on lithium metal anodes. This study used synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function analysis to identify and differentiate two elusive components, LiH and LiF, in the SEI of lithium metal anodes. The presence of LiH in the SEI was confirmed, with discussion on the possibility of its misidentification as LiF in the literature. The study also found that LiF in the SEI has different structural features from LiF in the bulk phase, which favor Li+ transport and make it a favored component for the SEI.

Summary: Despite the approaching performance limits of lithium-ion intercalation batteries, research is intensifying on next-generation battery technologies, with a focus on the use of lithium metal anode. However, the poor morphological stability and Coulombic efficiency of the lithium metal anode in liquid electrolytes present challenges for reversible cycling. Experimental and theoretical insights are being used to explore pathways for stable cycling of two-dimensional lithium metal and improvements in understanding lithium metal nucleation and deposition on the nanoscale. Recent advances in electrolytes and SEI design show potential for stable cycling and mitigation of morphological instabilities.
