Tailoring flat bands and topological phases in a multistrand Creutz network

Amrita Mukherjee et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the triggering of topological phase transitions and flat bands in a multistrand Creutz ladder network through a suitable correlation between system parameters. By changing the basis appropriately, a finite N-strand mesh can be mapped into N or N-1 decoupled SuSchrieffer-Heeger chains, depending on the parity of N. The use of a simple real-space decimation scheme is powerful in analytically extracting and explaining the flat bands.

Long-range hopping and indexing assumption in one-dimensional topological insulators

R. G. Dias et al.

Summary: In this paper, the effects of introducing long-range hoppings on the bulk topological invariants in one-dimensional topological insulator models are investigated. The extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain is used as a specific example to illustrate the behavior when such hoppings are introduced. The results demonstrate that the bipartite property of the system is broken and band inversion occurs in the band structure as the relative values of the hopping terms change.

Exotic Topological Bands and Quantum States in Meta Organic and Covalent-Organic Frameworks

Wei Jiang et al.

Summary: Metal-organic and covalent-organic frameworks have unique structural properties such as high porosity and large surface-to-volume ratio, which have led to extensive research for fundamental interests and promising applications. Recent experimental breakthroughs in synthesizing 2D conjugated MOFs/COFs with high conductivity and robust magnetism have sparked renewed interest in their electronic properties. The diversity and high tunability of MOFs/COFs have provided a platform to explore novel quantum physics and chemistry, leading to the discovery of exotic quantum states.

Controlled imprisonment of wave packet and flat bands in a fractal geometry

Atanu Nandy

Summary: This research reports the explicit construction and tunability of non-dispersive flat band modes based on a fractal geometry structure, showing the localized characteristics and controllability of these states. The study found that the onset of localization can be delayed by choosing the electron energy appropriately, leading to a controlled decay of the wave function envelope.

First principles investigation of structural, electronic and optical properties of synthesized radiaannulene oligomers for 6,6,12-graphyne

Subhadip Nath et al.

Summary: This study explores the Raman spectra, electronic, and optical properties of 6,6,12-graphyne oligomers from a theoretical perspective. The experimental yield of the oligomers aligns well with evaluated cohesive energy/atom, and the Raman spectra exhibit signatures of both sp(2) and sp hybridized carbon atoms. The degree of polymerization of the oligomers can be efficiently determined from the Raman active modes, indicating strong optical responses in the visible range and relevance in optoelectronic devices.

2n-root weak, Chern, and higher-order topological insulators, and 2n-root topological semimetals

A. M. Marques et al.

Summary: The concept of 2(n)-root topology has been introduced and applied in one-dimensional and two-dimensional systems. By iteratively squaring the Hamiltonians and applying different energy downshifts, decoupled models with specific topological features can be obtained. In certain cases, a 4-root version has been found in two-dimensional models, allowing for the mapping between non-Hermitian models and their Hermitian counterparts in some scenarios.

One-dimensional 2n-root topological insulators and superconductors

A. M. Marques et al.

Summary: Square-root topology is a newly emerged subfield that describes a class of insulators and superconductors whose topological nature is only revealed after squaring their Hamiltonians. The concept can be generalized to 2(n)-root topological insulators and superconductors, with n as any positive integer, with their construction rules systematized. This work opens the way for extending 2(n)-root topology to higher-dimensional systems.
