Twistable dipolar aryl rings as electric field actuated conformational molecular switches

Summary: Controlling the chemical conformation of a system through external stimuli is a promising route for developing molecular switches, with the need for the conformation to be compatible with current electronic device technology. In organic chemical systems, conductivity is largely determined by the degree of pi-conjugation. By creating a net dipole, the dipolar system can be influenced to control the degree of conjugation through the application of an E-field.
