Association of arterial stiffness and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction in the elderly population - results from the CARLA study

Summary: Arterial stiffness is associated with left ventricular diastolic dysfunction and may contribute to the development of HFpEF. Higher AIx values are associated with increased likelihood of HFpEF in elderly males, while this association is not present in females.

Subendocardial Viability Ratio Predictive Value for Cardiovascular Risk in Hypertensive Patients

Viviana Aursulesei Onofrei et al.

Summary: This study found that subendocardial viability ratio (SEVR) is significantly correlated with age, blood pressure, and heart rate, and can be used as an indirect indicator for assessing future cardiovascular risk. Furthermore, SEVR is also significantly correlated with serum fibrinogen and hemoglobin levels, indicating its potential use in evaluating cardiovascular event risk in hypertensive patients.

Summary: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) contribute to 70% of global mortality, causing more than 38 million deaths annually, with cardiovascular disease (CVD) being the leading cause. Environmental stressors such as air pollution, noise, artificial light, and climate change, including heat extremes and natural disasters, are strongly associated with the risk of NCDs.

Cardiac Rehabilitation in Patients with Peripheral Artery Disease-A Literature Review in COVID-19 Era

Razvan Anghel et al.

Summary: This article reviews and summarizes the scientific literature on cardiac rehabilitation programs for patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and explores how these programs were adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic. The implementation of such programs has faced challenges due to social distancing and work-related restrictions. Home-based walking exercises and alternative forms of exercise such as cycling have been found to be more accessible and acceptable during the pandemic. Supervised exercise therapy has shown positive impacts on functional capacity and quality of life for these patients.

Cardiac Rehabilitation in Peripheral Artery Disease in a Tertiary Center-Impact on Arterial Stiffness and Functional Status after 6 Months

Razvan Anghel et al.

Summary: This study assessed factors associated with clinical improvement in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) undergoing a rehabilitation program at an academic medical center in north-eastern Europe. The results showed that smoking cessation, changing sedentary lifestyle, and improvement in lipid and carbohydrate profile, as well as functional status parameters, were associated with clinical improvement at the 6-months follow-up. This study highlights the importance of an integrative, multidisciplinary management approach in maintaining functional status and improving quality of life in PAD patients.

Evaluation of Intima-Media Thickness and Arterial Stiffness as Early Ultrasound Biomarkers of Carotid Artery Atherosclerosis

Veronica Fernandez-Alvarez et al.

Summary: Carotid atherosclerosis is a major and potentially preventable cause of ischemic stroke, with early detection of subclinical atherosclerosis being crucial for initiating vascular prevention strategies. Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and arterial stiffness are important new biomarkers in the early stages of carotid atherosclerosis, providing reliable markers for cardiovascular risk prediction, particularly in young individuals. Despite the controversy surrounding the usefulness of CIMT measurement in improving cardiovascular risk models, carotid stiffness has been shown to add value to risk prediction based on traditional factors like Framingham risk assessment, especially for those at intermediate cardiovascular risk.

Epicardial Adipose Tissue: A Novel Potential Imaging Marker of Comorbidities Caused by Chronic Inflammation

Maria Grazia Tarsitano et al.

Summary: The correlation between obesity and chronic metabolic and cardiovascular diseases has led to a strong interest in adipocyte biology, specifically in relation to epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) and its pro-inflammatory role. Various imaging techniques have been used to quantify EAT. The evaluation of EAT can provide valuable data on patient prognosis and could potentially be a therapeutic target for new medications.

Cardiac Rehabilitation and Mortality Risk Reduction in Peripheral Artery Disease at 6-Month Outcome

Razvan Anghel et al.

Summary: The management of patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) is integrative and multidisciplinary, in which cardiac rehabilitation (CR) plays a prognostic role in terms of functional status, quality of life, and long-term impact on morbidity and mortality. This study found that comorbidities such as obesity, renal dysfunction, dyslipidemia, tobacco use, and diabetes mellitus have long-term prognostic value for PAD patients. Additionally, factors such as low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting glucose, peak oxygen uptake, pain-free walking distance, maximum walking time, and maximum walking distance are associated with clinical improvement at the 6-month follow-up for PAD patients.

Summary: Adipokines are active molecules produced by adipose tissue involved in obesity-related metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. Arterial stiffness, a consequence of arteriosclerosis, is an independent predictor of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Dysregulation of adipokines may lead to increased arterial stiffness through various mechanisms.
